APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 1998 Altima (L30) SERVICE INFORMATION
If a 1998 Altima exhibits a rattle noise in the right rear area, the cause may be the jack base touching the tender brace or the jack moving within the mounting bracket. The rattle noise may occur when the vehicle door is slammed shut, or when going over small bumps in the roadway. To eliminate this noise, use the following procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the jack from the mounting bracket.
2. Loosen the mounting nuts and bolt that secure the jack mounting bracket to the vehicle (see Figure 1).
3. Move the jack mounting bracket towards the rear of the vehicle to get the largest possible gap between the bracket and the vertical fender brace.
4. Re-tighten the bracket mounting nuts and bolt.
5. Install four pieces of adhesive backed foam tape on the jack mounting bracket (see Figure 2).
6. Reinstall the jack.
NOTE:
Make sure the jack is firmly secured in the mounting bracket. This can be done by inserting a screwdriver through the jack adjusting eyelet and turning until the jack firmly presses against the mounting bracket.
CAUTION:
Do not overtighten the jack adjusting eyelet as this can damage the jack mounting bracket.
7. Test for rattle noise by pulling on the jack.
