1998 ALTIMA FUEL DOOR STICKING

APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 1998 Altima (L30)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If the fuel door on a 1998 Altima does not open readily when the fuel door release lever is pressed, use the procedure in this bulletin to diagnose and repair the incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Press the fuel door lever. The fuel door should open.

If the fuel door does not open when the lever is pressed, one person should press on the lever while another person pushes on the fuel door forward of its pivot point.

2. Use a steel rule (ruler) to measure the stroke of the latch.

A. First, measure the latch fully extended.

B. Then measure the latch while the lever is pressed down (see Figure 1). The stroke should be at least 6 mm (5/16 in.).

3. If the stroke is less than 6 mm (5/16 in.), adjust the cable at the lever (see Figure 2).

A. Remove the door sill finisher and pull the carpet away from the fuel door release lever area.

B. Loosen the bolt at the fuel cable housing.

C. Move the cable housing forward, then tighten the bolt.

4. Measure the stroke at the fuel door latch again (see step 2).

A. It the stroke is not 6 mm (5/16 in.) or more, replace the cable.

B. It the latch stroke is 6 mm (5/16 in.) or more and the fuel door continues to stick, the rubber bumpers at the fuel door are likely sticking to the painted surface on the body. Use a talc coating (e.g.: spray-on foot powder) to keep them from sticking.
