SERVICE INFORMATION

If an applied 1995-98 Maxima (with spoiler) has intermittent false alarms from the security system, the cause may be corrosion on the trunk lid lock assembly. If water leaks through the groove in the spoiler spacer and drips onto the trunk lid lock assembly, the switch on the lock assembly could become corroded and cause intermittent short circuits sending a false "trunk open" signal to the body control module (BCM). Because the BCM would think the trunk is open, the alarm would sound.

Use the following procedure to diagnose and repair this incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open the trunk. Remove the inner trunk lid finisher and plastic lock assembly cover (see Figure 1).

2. Unbolt the trunk lid lock assembly from the trunk lid. Leave the wires connected.

3. Push the lock mechanism to simulate a closed trunk (see Figure 2.)

4. Make sure all doors are closed. Push the LOCK button on the remote transmitter to arm the system.

5. Look for the red LED security system light on the dash to verify the system is armed. The LED should blink once every 2.4 seconds.

6. Tap the lock assembly switch and/or wiggle the wires to the switch.

7. If the alarm is activated, replace the trunk lid lock assembly.

8. Replace the trunk spoiler spacers with the countermeasure spacers (see Figure 3). Replace the trunk spoiler spacers even if you cannot see corrosion on the lock assembly switch.

9. Tighten the spoiler retaining nuts to 0.44-0.60 kg-m (3.18-4.34 ft-lb).
