1999-2000 ALTIMA SUNROOF JAMS WHEN OPENING REARWARD

This bulletin amends NTB00-010 and includes updated Claims Information. Please discard all previous paper copies of NTB00-010.

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1999-2000 Altima (L30)

SERVICE INFORMATION
The 1999-2000 Altima (L30) has an optional power sunroof that can either slide open or tilt up at the rear of the sunroof glass.

If an Applied Vehicle has a sunroof that will tilt up but will not slide open, use the Service Procedure to resolve the incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Close the sunroof. This is known as the "home position".

2. Remove the sunroof glass (refer to the appropriate Service Manual).

3. Locate the left hand Link Arm and Link Arm Foot (see Figure 1).

4. Compare the position and condition of the left hand Link Arm and Link Arm Foot with the right hand Link Arm Foot. The left hand Link Arm will probably be too far rearward. The Link Arm Foot will probably be above the track and bent. See Figure 2.

NOTE:
If the left hand Link Arm Foot appears bent, it will be straightened later in this procedure.

5. Push the left hand Link Arm to the forward position (see Figure 3) until it latches (clicks) into the home position and cannot be pulled rearward.

6. "Tilt" and then "Close" the sunroof mechanism, returning it to the home position.

7. Confirm that both left hand and right hand Cable Cam Followers are aligned with the 2 scribe marks on the Link Arms (see Figure 4).

^ If Cable Cam Follower alignment is OK, proceed to step 8.
^ If alignment is N/G:

a. Remove the sunroof motor (see the appropriate Service Manual).
b. Manually move the cables (by sliding the Cable Cam Followers) to align the Cable Cam Followers with the Link Arm scribe marks.
c. Plug the sunroof motor back into the vehicle harness.
d. The sunroof motor has built-in limit switches for full clockwise, full counterclockwise and home/middle position. Using the sunroof motor switch, run the motor one direction and then the other until the home/middle position is reached.
e. Reinstall the sunroof motor.

8. Run the sunroof mechanism to the "Tilt" position.

^ If the left hand Link Arm Foot is not bent, use a 2.5 mm hex wrench to slightly loosen its securing bolt. Then proceed to step 9.
^ If the left hand Link Arm Foot is bent:

a. Using a 2.5 mm hex wrench, remove the Link Arm Foot and its securing bolt.
b. Carefully bend the Link Arm Foot back to its original shape (compare it to the right hand Link Arm Foot for guidance).

CAUTION:
Take care doing this step. The Link Arm Foot or its securing bolt is not available as a separate service part.

c. Assemble the left hand Link Arm Foot and securing bolt back onto the Link Arm, leaving the securing bolt finger tight for now.

9. Return the sunroof mechanism to the home position.

10. While watching the left hand Link Arm Foot position and using the sunroof switch, "bump" the sunroof mechanism slowly toward the "Open" position. Using this method center the Link Arm Foot into the track opening as shown if Figure 5. Make sure the Link Arm Foot is exactly flush with the top of the track as shown in Figure 5.

NOTE:
The position of the foot is critical for a correct adjustment to be done. Take your time when doing this step.

11. Have a helper push and hold the left hand Link Arm rearward.

NOTE:
The Link Arm will not noticeably move rearward. This pressure assures the Link Arm is in the proper position for Link Arm Foot adjustment.

12. While maintaining rearward Link Arm pressure, adjust the Link Arm Foot until it contacts the rear edge of the track opening (see Figure 6). Once done, use a 2.5 mm hex wrench to hand tighten the Link Arm Foot securing bolt. Do not overtighten.

13. Cycle the sunroof mechanism through the "Tilt" and "Open" positions. Listen for ratcheting (slipping) sounds. Any ratcheting sound indicates one or both of the cables are slipping.

^ If there are no ratcheting (slipping) sounds, proceed to step 14.
^ If there are ratcheting (slipping) sounds, replace the sunroof and motor assembly.

14. Return the sunroof mechanism to the home position.

15. Install the sunroof glass, leaving the securing bolts loose so the sunroof glass can be adjusted.

16. Place a shim between the forward edge of the sunroof glass and the body opening (see Figure 7). This will position the sunroof glass slightly towards the rear of the body opening.

NOTE:
Thin plastic "temporary license plates" (dealer advertising plates) can be used as shims if they are available.

17. Torque the sunroof glass securing bolts to 3.8 ft-lb (0.52 kg-m, 5.1 N-m).

18. Remove the shims and verify correct sunroof operation.
