SERVICE INFORMATION
If a squeak/squeal noise in the rear brakes occurs during the first few applications on an applied 1995-99 Maxima after an overnight cold soak (usually below 40 Fahrenheit), the rear brake pads may need to be replaced. The noise may be more noticeable when backing up.
Rear brake pad kits are available to correct this condition if it should occur.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the noise exists under the conditions described above.
2. Replace the rear brake pads with the parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Use the appropriate service manual procedure located in the BR section under REAR DISC BRAKE/Pad Replacement.
3. When installing the rear pads to the caliper, be sure to rotate the piston to properly align one of the caliper piston index slots with the index pin on the brake pad (see Figure 1).
4. It is not necessary to turn the rotors as part of this squeak/squeal noise repair.
5. Change the brake hardware and shims as needed.
6. Perform several stops after replacing the pads to burnish the brake contact surfaces. Use the procedure from the appropriate service manual, located in the BR section under ON-VEHICLE SERVICE/Brake Burnishing.
