SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1998 or 1999 Maxima with an automatic transmission exhibits a hesitation or throttle shock after the accelerator is gently applied and then released, the cause may be the Engine Control Module (ECM). The condition may occur while cruising in 4th gear between 40-50 mph.

A replacement ECM with modified control logic has been developed to correct the described condition, if it should occur.

Use the procedure below to verify the condition exists and replace the ECM.

SERVICE PROCEDURE (For Automatic Transmission Equipped Models Only)

1. Verify the condition exists as described above by warming up the vehicle, driving steady between 40-50 mph, and then slightly releasing and applying the accelerator pedal.

2. Determine the correct ECM part number to use from the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

NOTE:
You must determine whether or not the vehicle is a base GXE model (S rated tire), whether the vehicle has a Traction Control System (TCS) or does not, and whether the vehicle has Federal/Canadian or California emissions. The replacement ECM part numbers are different.

3. Remove and replace the ECM with the applicable part.
