Front Area, Upper

NTB99-042/BT99-023: REPAIR OF SQUEAKS AND RATTLES IN FRONT AREA, UPPER FOR 1995-99 SENTRA/200SX

The front area, upper includes: Dash pad and instrument cluster, dash internal structure and components, windshield to dash interface area, glove box, audio and HVAC controls and vents.

NOTE:
Read through all of the incidents listed in this section that apply to the incident area in the vehicle. Some repairs may need to be done in combination with others.

WARNING:
If a part of the SRS (air bag) needs to be serviced, always turn the ignition switch off, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three (3) minutes before performing the service.

INCIDENT 1:
RATTLE NOISE COMING FROM THE LOWER DASH PANEL TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING WHEEL.

Verify:
This noise may occur when driving on pavement or rough roads.

Isolate:
This noise may be caused by contact between the Automatic Speed Control Device (ASCD) module and a wire harness that passes above the ASCD module.

Repair:

1. Remove the drivers side lower instrument panel cover (see Figure 1).

2. Remove two bolts and remove the drivers side lower knee panel (see Figure 2).

3. Remove one nut and remove the drivers side lower knee panel support bracket (see Figure 3).

4. Remove two screws and remove the ASCD module (see Figure 4).

5. Attach foam pad (P/N 76884-71L01) to the ASCD module (see Figure 5).

6. Re-install the removed components in the reverse order they were removed.

Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to confirm the repair is complete.

INCIDENT 2:
RATTLE NOISE COMING FROM THE HOOD RELEASE HANDLE.

Verify:
This noise may occur when driving on pavement or rough roads.

Isolate:
This noise may be duplicated by lightly tapping on the hood release handle. The noise may be caused by contact between the hood release handle and the hood cable sheath.

Repair:

1. Cut a piece of foam pad (P/N 76884-71L02) in the shape of a ring (see Figure 6).

2. Place the foam ring between the hood release handle and the hood cable sheath making sure the adhesive side is placed towards the sheath (see Figure 6).

Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to confirm the repair is complete.

INCIDENT 3:
RATTLE NOISE COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.

Verify:
This noise may occur when driving on pavement or rough roads.

Isolate:
The noise may be caused by contact between a wire harness and the dash.

Secure the illumination switch harness, ASCD switch harness (if equipped) and the door mirror switch harness in a bundle using foam pad P/N 76884-71L01 (see Figure 7).

Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to confirm the repair is complete.
