SERVICE INFORMATION
If a 2000 Maxima has a scratch(s) in the top of the rear bumper just below the lower edge of the trunk lid (see Figure 1), use the following service procedure to resolve the incident.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Confirm incident scratches exist.
2. Remove both tail lamp assemblies.
3. Remove the two black plastic push-fasteners under each tail lamp assembly (see Figure 2).
4. Remove the rear bumper fascia (refer to page BT-16 of the 2000 Maxima Service Manual).
5. Remove five old plastic retaining clips from the bumper fascia (see Figure 3).
6. Install five new plastic retaining clips on the bumper fascia (not the vehicle body), making sure the new clips are correctly positioned and fully seated on the bumper (see Figure 3).
7. Inspect the foam impact absorber and make sure it is properly positioned on the aluminum bumper beam.
NOTE:
If the foam impact absorber is improperly positioned, it will interfere with the bumper fascia and prevent the new clips from properly engaging the body.
8. Re-install the bumper fascia making sure each clip fully engages the body. A click noise can be heard when the clip engages the body.
9. Install and tighten (snug only) the nut that secures each corner of the bumper (closest to the tail lamp assembly). See Figure 4.
10. Close the trunk lid and check the clearance between the trunk lid and the bumper.
A. If there is adequate clearance, proceed with step 11.
B. If the clearance is not adequate, re-check the plastic retaining clips to make sure they are fully engaged to the vehicle body. Re-engage the clips as necessary and proceed with step 11.
11. Check the alignment of the holes below each tail lamp assembly (i.e., the holes for the black plastic push-fasteners). See Figure 5.
A. If the holes line up, install the black plastic push-fasteners, then proceed with step 12.
B. If the holes do not completely line up, carefully enlarge the front edge of the vehicle mounting bracket holes (not the bumper fascia holes) so the black plastic push-fasteners can be installed. Install the black plastic push-fasteners, then proceed with step 12.
NOTE:
Tighten the bumper fascia mounting fasteners in the order described in step 12 to avoid mis-alignment, binding or bulging of the bumper fascia.
12. Tighten the nut that secures each corner of the bumper (closest to the tail lamp assembly). Then tighten the remaining fasteners as outlined on page BT-16 of the 2000 Maxima Service Manual.
