Front Area, Upper
NTB99-056D/BT99-038D: REPAIR OF SQUEAKS AND RATTLES IN FRONT AREA, UPPER FOR 2000 MAXIMAThe front area, upper includes: Dash pad and instrument cluster, dash internal structure and components, windshield to dash interface area, glove box, audio and HVAC controls and vents.
NOTE: Read through all of the incidents listed in this section that apply to the incident area in the vehicle. Some repairs may need to be done in combination with others.
WARNING: If a part of the SRS (air bag) needs to be serviced, always turn the ignition switch off, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least three (3) minutes before performing the service.
INCIDENT 1: BUZZ NOISE FROM GLOVE BOX AREA
Verify:
This noise may occur when driving on rough pavement at speeds over 20 MPH or when the glove box door is closed.
Isolate:
This noise may be caused by contact between the passenger side knee protector bar and the ventilation duct.
Repair:
1. Remove the glove box/lower passenger side dash cover.

2. Apply felt tape (P/N 38370-4B000) to the ventilation duct, between the duct and knee protector bar (see Figure 1).
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to confirm the repair is complete.
INCIDENT 2: SQUEAK FROM THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
Verify:
This noise may occur when driving on pavement or rough roads at speeds over 15 MPH and over bumps.
Isolate:
While on a test drive, this incident may be changed (stops or gets weaker) by pushing on the lower part of the A-pillar garnish or by inserting a piece of paper between the instrument panel and the A-pillar garnish. This incident may be caused by contact between the instrument panel pad and the bottom of the A-pillar finisher. Check for the existence of felt cloth tape in that area. If is not there or if it is not properly placed, apply the tape as shown in the Repair section below.
Repair:
1. Remove the A-pillar finisher.

2. Apply felt cloth tape (P/N 68239-13E00) to the end of the instrument panel pad (see Figure 2).
NOTE: Left side is shown in Figure 2. Repair to right side incident is similar.
4. Reinstall A-pillar finisher.
Recheck:
Test the vehicle as described above to ensure the repair is complete.
