SERVICE INFORMATION
If the trunk area of a 2000-2002 Sentra has water in the left and/or right rear wheel house section:
^ there may be a gap in the body seams. This Service Procedure will:
^ Help you find out if the seams between the left and/or right rear fender panel and wheel well outer panel are not completely sealed,
And
^ Provide repair steps to correct the leak(s), if gaps between body panels and/or broken bond joints are found.
Fusor Urethane Sealer/Adhesive # 800, which can be ordered through the Nissan Direct Ship Chemical Care Product Program, is available to repair this incident, if it should occur. It is listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.
NOTE:
This procedure only covers water leaks in the trunk. It does not cover any water leaks occurring inside the passenger sections of the vehicle.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Identify Leak Areas:
1. Identify on which side(s) of the trunk the leak is happening.
2. Inspect the inside of the trunk to see if there are any visible causes for the leak, such as:
^ large gaps between body panels,
^ broken body panel seams,
NOTE:
Look closely at the area inside the trunk opposite the rear fender panel seam and wheel.
3. Put the car up on a hoist:
A. Remove the wheel.
B. Remove the rear bumper fascia finisher.
^ Use two flat-bladed screwdrivers to pop out the two C205 clips that attach the fascia finisher to the bumper (see Figure 1).
4. Inspect the wheel well to see if there are any visible causes for the leak, such as:
^ large gaps between body panels,
^ broken body panel seams,
NOTE:
Look closely at the seam between the rear fender panel and the wheel well outer panel (see Figure 2 for views of the affected area, seen from the car's exterior and from inside the wheel well).
5. To identify the leaking areas:
^ Shine a flashlight or shop light on the suspect body panel seams, from the outside. Have another technician look inside the trunk and mark any area(s) where light shows through.
and/or
^ Spray water, from a hose, on the exterior wheel well seams to pinpoint the exact location where water enters the trunk.
Apply Sealer/Adhesive
1. When the area(s) of the leak are pinpointed;
A. Completely clean and dry the area where the gaps and broken seams are found. This is so the sealer/adhesive bonds well to the body (see Figure 3).
B. Apply a bead of Fusor(R) # 800 Urethane Sealer/Adhesive to the wheel well side of the broken body panel gaps and/or broken seams (see Figure 3).
2. Repeat step 5 to check that the leak is no longer present.
3. Re-install the rear bumper fascia finisher.
4. Re-install the wheel and torque wheel nuts to specifications: 98-117 N-m (10 - 12 kg-m, 73 - 86 ft-lb).
