SERVICE INFORMATION

If an applied 2000 Sentra with QG18DE or SR2ODE engine displays the following symptoms:

^ The fuel tank will only fill with the gasoline nozzle pumping at a slow rate.

^ The nozzle "clicks off" multiple times when gas is pumped at a faster rate. the cause(s) may be:

^ Blockage in the recirculation and/or fuel filler signal lines in the fuel filler tube assembly.

^ Incorrect operation of the refueling control valve inside the fuel tank.

Use the procedure in this bulletin to diagnose and repair the vehicle it either of the described symptoms exists.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT:
Make sure the vehicle has less than 1/4 tank of fuel before you begin this procedure.

1. Remove the gas cap and raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Disconnect the fuel filler signal line and recirculation line from where they connect into their hoses (see Figure 1).

3. Check for blockage as follows:

A. Connect a hand vacuum pump to the recirculation line and attempt to pull a vacuum (see Figure 1).

B. Repeat this step on the fuel filler signal line (see Figure 1 ).

^ If you can pull a vacuum on either line (i.e. if either line is clogged or blocked) replace the fuel filler tube assembly (see the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin for appropriate replacement part - Federal or California emissions).

^ If the recirculation and fuel filler signal lines are not blocked (i.e. if air passes freely through both lines), complete step 4 below.

4. Check the fuel tank as follows:

A. Attach the hand vacuum pump to the fuel filler signal hose that leads to the fuel tank (see Figure 2). If you cannot pull a vacuum (i.e. if air passes freely through the hose) replace the fuel tank.

For instruction on replacing the fuel tank, go to the FE Section (Accelerator Control, Fuel And Exhaust Systems) of the 2000 Sentra Electronic Service Manual and complete FUEL TANK REMOVAL pages FE-6 through FE-8.

B. Attach the hand vacuum pump to the recirculation line hose that leads to the fuel tank (see Figure 2). If you can pull a vacuum on this hose (i.e. if the line is clogged or blocked) replace the fuel tank.

For instruction on replacing the fuel tank, go to the FE Section (Accelerator Control, Fuel And Exhaust Systems) of the 2000 Sentra Electronic Service Manual and complete FUEL TANK REMOVAL pages FE-6 through FE-8.

5. Reconnect all hoses and lines.

6. When all repairs are complete, test by adding fuel to the tank.
