APPLIED VEHICLES:
2000 - 2002 Maxima (A33)

IF YOU CONFIRM:

An Applied Vehicle has an MIL "ON" and any of the following DTCs stored in the ECM:

^ P0138 (Bank 1) H0252 (Rear) (Max Voltage Monitoring)

^ P0139 (Bank 1) H0252 (Rear) (Response Monitoring)

^ P0140 (Bank 1) H0252 (Rear) (High Voltage)

^ P1147 (Bank 1) H0252 (Rear) (High Voltage Monitoring)

^ P0158 (Bank 2) H02S2 (Rear) (Max Voltage Monitoring)

^ P0159 (Bank 2) H0252 (Rear) (Response Monitoring)

^ P0160 (Bank 2) H02S2 (Rear) (High Voltage Monitoring)

^ P1167 (Bank 2) H02S2 (Rear) (High Voltage Monitoring),

DETERMINE IF:

This bulletin applies by performing steps 1 and 2 of the Service Procedure.

ACTIONS:

a. Replace rear Oxygen Sensor(s) (H02S2).

^ 2000 federal emissions Maximas have only 1 rear 02 sensor (Bank 1); replace it.

^ Other Maximas have 2 rear 02 sensors (Bank 1 and Bank 2); replace both.

b. Reprogram the ECM:

^ Standard reprogramming procedure (if vehicle has a standard airflow meter, P/N 22680-AD200 or 22680-6N201-see Chart A-1), or

^ Special reprogramming procedure using ECM ID code (if vehicle has an updated airflow meter, P/N 22680-2Y001 or 22680-AM600-see Chart A-2).

IMPORTANT:

^ The purpose of "ACTIONS (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

^ Due to the complexity of this procedure, this procedure should only be performed by a technician who is already familiar with ECM reprogramming.

PARTS INFORMATION

CLAIMS INFORMATION

Submit a Primary Failed Part (PP) line claim using the claims coding shown.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Print out the CONSULT-II Self-Diagnosis results.

^ This print out will be used to check the ECM Part Number (determine if this bulletin applies).

^ See Figure 1 for an example of the CONSULT-II Self-Diagnosis printout.

2. Compare the vehicle's current ECM P/N (from your CONSULT-II Self Diagnosis printout) to those shown under Current ECM P/N in Chart A-1 and A-2 below.

A. If the ECM P/N in the vehicle does not match one of those listed under "Current ECM P/N" in Chart A-1 or A-2:

^ This bulletin does not apply.

^ Use the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) to further diagnose and repair the incident.

B. If the ECM P/N in the vehicle matches one of those listed under "Current ECM P/N" in Chart A-1 or A-2:

^ Proceed with this Service Procedure.

3. Replace the rear oxygen sensor(s)-H02S2.

^ 2000 federal emissions Maximas has only 1 rear 02 sensor (Bank 1); replace it.

^ Other Maximas have 2 rear 02 sensors (Bank 1 and Bank 2); replace both.

^ Refer to Figures 2, 3, and 4 for H02S2 location information.

02 Sensor Location - 2000 Federal Maxima:

02 Sensor Location, 2000 California Maxima / All 2001 and 2002 Maxima:

02 Sensor Connector Location:

NOTE:
The 2000 federal emissions Maxima does not have an H02S2 B2 or corresponding connector.

4. Perform ECM reprogramming to install the latest available ECM data.

A. For vehicles with an ECM P/N that matches one listed in Chart A-1 (vehicles with a standard airflow meter):

^ Perform standard ECM reprogramming.

^ If you are unfamiliar with ECM Reprogramming, refer to Attachment A in the print copy of this bulletin.

B. For vehicles with an ECM P/N that matches one listed in Chart A-2 (vehicles with an updated airflow meter):

^ Perform Special ECM reprogramming using the ECM ID Code.

^ If you are unfamiliar with special ECM Reprogramming, refer to Attachment 1 in the print copy of this bulletin.

^ This I.D. code reprogramming process is different from the standard ECM reprogramming procedures you may be used to.

IMPORTANT:

^ Some vehicles may have an updated airflow meter with matching ECM reprogramming data

^ To make sure you obtain the correct reprogramming data, the type of airflow meter installed in the vehicle should be confirmed by checking the ECM and airflow meter part numbers (P/N).

^ Vehicles with an ECM P/N that matches one listed in Chart A-1 should have the standard airflow meter.

a. 2000 - 2001: Standard Airflow Meter P/N 22680-AD200

b. 2002: Standard Airflow Meter P/N 22680-6N201

^ Vehicles with an ECM P/N that matches one listed in Chart A-2 should have the updated airflow meter.

a. 2000 -2001: Updated Airflow Meter P/N 22680-2Y001

b. 2002: Updated Airflow Meter P/N 22680-AM600

Standard ECM Reprogramming

^ For those familiar with standard ECM Reprogramming, perform the following:

A) Select model and model year for the applied vehicle (example: Maxima, 2002).

B) Select the vehicle "configuration from those listed in the upper right ECM data description window.

^ For vehicle configuration, see Chart A-1

^ Vehicle configuration example: 2002 with A/T.

C) Make a note of the "To number listed in the "ECM Reprogramming Data" Summary screen.

NOTE:
The "To number will read: 23710-XXXXX.

D) Press "Continue and follow directions to perform data download from ASIST to CONSULT-II.

E) When reprogramming from CONSULT-II, select the "To number that you made note of in step C, above.

Special ECM Reprogramming Using an ID Code:

^ Use these steps if you are familiar with this Special ECM reprogramming procedure.

^ If you are unfamiliar with this Special ECM Reprogramming Procedure, or refer to Attachment 1 in the printed copy of this bulletin.

1. Click on the Keypad button (see Figure 6).

2. Use the digit keys on the KeyPad (see Figure 7 below), to enter the correct ECM ID Code from Chart A-2.

3. Then click the "Continue" button on the keypad.

4. Click the "Continue" button on the ECM Data Reprogramming screen (see Figure 8) to proceed to CONSULT-II setup.

5. Continue the reprogramming procedure as per SPECIAL ECM REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE FOR ECM I.D. ENTRY; Attachment 1.
