Service Procedure

Refer to the "Diagnosis and Repair Flow Chart" shown to apply the correct repair procedure to resolve the incident.

IMPORTANT:
For vehicles within this campaign, transverse link mounting bolts that have the number "12" embossed in the center of the hex head MUST be replaced (see Figure 1).

PROCEDURE 1: All Transverse Link Mounting Bolts are Present and in Good Condition

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist (suspension unloaded).

CAUTION:
Do not use a "drive-on" type hoist as the suspension must be unloaded (i.e., the vehicle's weight cannot be carried through the wheels) while performing the repair.

2. Replace transverse link mounting bolts ( one at a time ) with the new bolts specified in the Parts Information section.

NOTES:
^ Hand-tighten each bolt first, then torque it according to step 3 below.

^ Do not use power tools to install or tighten the bolts.

^ Do not lubricate the bolts before installing them. Install the bolts dry.

3. Tighten each bolt as follows:

A. Tighten bolt to 57 N-m (5.8 Kg-m, 42 ft-lb), then,

B. Tighten bolt to 67.8 N-m (7 Kg-m, 50 ft-lb).

PROCEDURE 2: One or Two Transverse Link Mounting Bolts are Broken (either side) and the Transverse Link is Not Broken/Cracked

1. Remove all transverse link mounting bolts.

2. Re-position (move down) the transverse link(s) to gain access to the remaining portion of the broken bolt(s).

3. Extract the remaining portion of the broken bolt(s) using a suitable method/tool. Use care not to damage the threads in the suspension member.

4. Follow the flowchart, shown.

PROCEDURE 3: One or Two Transverse Link Mounting Bolts are Broken (either side) and the Transverse Link is Broken/Cracked

PROCEDURE 4: Three Transverse Link Mounting Bolts are Broken (either side)

1. Replace the suspension member with the one specified in the Parts Information section. Refer to the "SU" section of the applicable service manual for the suspension member replacement procedure.

2. Replace the transverse link assembly(s), on the side with the three broken bolts, with the one(s) specified in the Parts Information section. Refer to the "SU" section of the applicable Service Manual for the transverse link replacement procedure.

3. Install the 6 new transverse link mounting bolts with the ones specified in the Parts Information section.

NOTES:
^ Hand-tighten each bolt first, then torque it according to step 4 below.

^ Do not use power tools to install or tighten the bolts.

^ Do not lubricate the bolts before installing them. Install the bolts dry.

NOTE:
Use the new nut specified in the Parts Information section when installing the front transverse link mounting bolt*. Tighten the nut to 103 - 122 N-m (10.5 - 12.5 Kg- m, 76 - 89 ft-lb). * Only replace the bolt if it is damaged.

4. Evenly tighten the bolts as follows:

A. Tighten bolts to 57 N-m (5.8 Kg-m, 42 ft-lb), then,

B. Tighten bolts to 67.8 N-m (7 Kg-m, 50 ft-lb).

5. Perform a front wheel alignment.
