SERVICE INFORMATION
If the seat belt warning lamp of an applied vehicle comes on intermittently, this may be due to a loose yellow-color harness connector for the front seat belt pretensioner assembly.
If this incident should occur, follow the Service Procedure in this bulletin to install a new harness connector cap (see Figure 1) on both the front DRIVER and PASSENGER seat belt pretensioner assemblies.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT:
Do not replace the entire front seat belt pretensioner assemblies unless this procedure is attempted first and fails to correct this incident.
NOTE:
^ On 2000 model year vehicles, the control unit does not store the seat belt pretensioner diagnostic trouble codes.
^ CONSULT will only show the code when found in the current mode. The code that is shown, when found in the SELF-DIAG [CURRENT] mode, is PRE-TEN FRONT [OPEN/VB SHORT].
^ Sometimes, the seat belt warning lamp can be cleared unintentionally by touching or tapping the body harness connector and harness at the seat belt pretensioner assembly. This makes the incident difficult to diagnose.
^ On 2001 model year vehicles, the control unit will store pretensioner diagnostic trouble codes. They can be displayed in Self Diagnosis PAST or RECORD.
1. Confirm the incident.
2. Disassemble the LH and RH front seat belt pretensioner assemblies from the vehicle. Refer to the 2000 and 2001 Service Manual pages RS-3 to 6 and BT-25, 26 for the removal of the front seat belt pretensioner assemblies. It is not necessary to disconnect the white connector between the seat belt pretensioner to the body harness.
CAUTION:
Before removing the front seat belt pretention assembly, record radio pre-sets, turn the ignition switch off, disconnect both battery cables and wait for at least 3 minutes.
3. Install the harness connector caps to the yellow color connector of the LH and RH seat belt pretensioner assemblies (see Figure 2).
NOTE:
Ensure all 3 hooks of the connector cap are securely attached to the seat belt pretensioner assemblies.
4. Assemble the front seat belt pretensioner assemblies to the vehicle. Refer to the 2000 Service Manual pages RS-5 to and BT-25, 26 for the assembly of the front seat belt pretensioner assemblies to the vehicle.
5. Re-connect both battery cables and re-set radio pre-sets.
6. Confirm the incident has been resolved.
