2002 ALTIMA; SUNROOF WILL NOT CLOSE
DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH WIND DEFLECTOR
APPLIED VEHICLE:
All 2002 Altima (L31) - ONLY vehicles equipped with sunroof
SERVICE INFORMATION
If the sunroof on a 2002 Altima will not close, the cause may be interference between the sunroof and a damaged wind deflector assembly.
^ The wind deflector assembly is now available as a separate service part.
^ Refer to the Service Procedure for instructions on installing the new wind deflector assembly, if this incident should occur.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
IMPORTANT:
Use suitable covers to protect vehicle paint, upholstery, etc. when performing this procedure.
Replace the wind deflector with the one listed in the Parts Information table as shown.
Wind Deflector Removal
1. Press and hold the sunroof "open" button until the sunroof stops. Then, press and hold the "open" button again to move the sunroof to its maximum open position.
NOTE:
Steps two and three below apply to both the left and right side of the wind deflector.
2. Insert a small screwdriver between the sunroof slide rail and the outer portion of the wind deflector hinge (see Figure 1).
3. Move the screwdriver towards the center of the vehicle to pry the outer portion of the wind deflector hinge off of the sunroof slide rail (see Figure 1).
4. Once both outer hinge portions have been pried off of the slide rail, move (slide) the wind deflector rearward (see Figure 2) until it is two inches away from the forward edge or the sunroof glass. The purpose for doing this is to:
^ Release the inner portion of the wind deflector hinges from the sunroof slide rail
^ Position the wind deflector in preparation for step 5 below
5. Carefully lift the wind deflector up out of the sunroof opening as follows:
A. Tuck either hinged end (driver or passenger side) of the deflector into the open space (gap) between the sunroof slide rail and the vehicle roof (see Figure 3).
B. Lift the other end of the deflector up and out of the sunroof opening (see Figure 3).
C. Carefully remove the remaining portion of the deflector from the open space (between the sunroof slide rail and roof) and from the vehicle.
Wind Deflector Installation
Install the NEW wind deflector as follows:
1. Inspect and remove any dirt/debris from the sunroof slide rail that would interfere with proper operation of the wind deflector.
2. Look at the bottom side of each wind deflector hinge and note that there is a tab molded into the hinge. Once installed, these tabs must be aligned with the corresponding detents in the sunroof slide rail assembly (see Figure 4).
3. Carefully insert either hinged end of the NEW wind deflector into the open space (gap) between the sunroof slide rail and vehicle roof (same area as in step 5a). This will allow the other end of the deflector to be lowered into the sunroof opening.
NOTE:
Make sure the stop tab on each end of the deflector is placed under the sunroof opening when placing the deflector into position (see Figure 5).
4. Position both hinged ends of the wind deflector on the sunroof slide rail so that the tabs (on the bottom of each hinge) are placed over the slide rail detents (refer to Figure 4).
5. Install (lock) both deflector hinges onto the slide rail as follows:
A. Carefully use a screwdriver to press down on the inside portion of the wind deflector hinge (see Figure 6a) until you hear a snap noise.
NOTE:
The snap noise indicates that the hinge is locked onto the sunroof slide rail.
B. Use a screwdriver to press down on the outside portion of the wind deflector hinge (see Figure 6b) until you hear a snap noise.
NOTE:
You may have to use another screwdriver to hold down the inside portion of the hinge to ensure it does not pop out when the outer portion is snapped into place.
6. Make sure both hinge tabs are inserted in the mating detents and the hinges are fully seated (locked into position) on the slide rail.
7. Operate (open and close) the sunroof several times to ensure smooth/proper operation.
8. Close the sunroof and make sure the glass is flush with the vehicle roof.
