NOTE:
Use appropriate covers to protect upholstery, carpet, etc. when performing the following procedure.

1. Remove the A/T shift knob by turning it counter clockwise (see Figure 1).

NOTE:
^ Steps 2, 3 and 4 are for a 2002 vehicle.

^ On 2005 vehicles, the A/T shift selector bezel and the center console box are combined into one assembly. Refer to section IP in the 2005 Altima ESM.

2. Remove the A/T shift selector bezel as follows:

A. Use a plastic pry tool to carefully release the bezel securing clips (see Figure 2a & 2b).

NOTE:
Plastic pry tool kit J-46534 (an essential tool) is available form TECH-MATE at 1-800-662-2001.

B. Lift the bezel up to remove it (see Figure 2c).

3. Remove the climate control bezel by pulling rearward on the bezel to release the securing clips (see Figure 3).

4. Re-position the center console box assembly as follows:

A. Move the A/T shift selector lever to the most rearward ("1st gear") position.

B. Use a plastic pry tool to release the clips located at the rear sides of the console (see Figure 4a).

C. Pull rearward on the console box assembly to release securing clips (see Figure 4b).

D. Re-position the console box assembly, with the wire harnesses connected, to the passenger side of the center floor console (see Figure 4c).

5. Remove 4 bolts that secure the All shift assembly to the vehicle (see Figure 4c).

6. Disconnect the white wire harness connector from the front of the A/T shift assembly.

7. Remove the A/T shift cable retaining clip (see Figure 5).

8. Re-position the A/T selector guide as follows:

A. Move the A/T selector guide wires out from under the wire guide pin (see Figure 6a).

B. Lift up on the A/T selector guide to release 4 clips.

C. Lift the A/T selector guide up and over the A/T shift lever (see Figure 6b).

D. Flip the A/T selector upside down and re-position it to the driver side of the center floor console (see Figure 6c).

E. Remove the shifter slide cover by lifting it up off the shift lever (see Figure 7).

CAUTION:
Take note of the "F" and "R" on the shifter slide cover so as to correctly re-install it later in this procedure.

9. Disconnect the A/T shift cable from the A/T shift assembly as follows:

A. Pull the A/T shift cable end socket clip OFF of the mating ball stud (see Figure 8a). Be careful not to damage the clip.

B. Pull the A/T shift cable out of the A/T shift assembly (see Figure 8b).

10. Disconnect the 2 clips that secure the wire harness to the driver side of the A/T shift assembly (see Figure 9).

11. Remove the A/T shift assembly from the vehicle and gently place it upside down on a clean flat padded surface.

12. Install the Noise Damper Kit (P/N 34998-3Z000) as follows:

A. Remove the existing single rubber bumper from the white plastic lever arm slot by pulling it down and out with a pair of needle nose pliers (see Figure 10a) (not required on 2005 vehicles).

B. Install the NEW double rubber bumper in the white plastic lever arm slot (see Figure 10b) (not required on 2005 vehicles).

C. Attach the rubber stopper onto the metal plate (see Figure 11a).

D. Install the metal plate (with rubber stopper installed) on the A/T shift assembly with one screw, making sure:

^ The locating pins on the A/T shift assembly are aligned with the corresponding holes on the metal bracket (see Figure 11b).

13. Re-install the A/T shift assembly in the reverse order it was removed, making sure:

^ The A/T shift cable socket clip is securely attached to the ball stud (see Figure 8a).

^ The A/T shift cable retaining clip is fully seated in the shift cable groove and the tab (of the retaining clip) is pointed towards the rear of the vehicle (see Figure 5).

^ The A/T selector guide wires are correctly routed under the guide pin (see Figure 6a).

^ The shifter slide cover is properly positioned so that the "F" insignia is placed towards the front of the vehicle (see Figure 7).

^ The wire harness is correctly connected to the A/T shift assembly.

^ The wire harness clips (qty 2) are firmly attached to the driver side of the A/T shift assembly (see Figure 9).

^ You apply thread locker (such as Loctite Worldtech(TM) # 242 or equivalent) to the shift knob threads

14. Confirm the incident is resolved (no more clicking) by pressing the brake pedal:

^ When the vehicle is stopped.

^ When pushing the brake pedal while driving.

15. Drive the vehicle to make sure it shifts into all gears correctly, making sure there is no binding or interference in the shifter movement.
