APPLIED VEHICLES:
2002-2003 Altima (L31) - with Automatic Transmission
SERVICE INFORMATION
If an applied vehicle shows all of the following symptom:
^ Engine does not crank when the gear shift selector lever is in Park (P) position,
^ Engine does crank when the gear shift selector lever is in Neutral (N),
^ Incident usually happens if the engine is at normal driving temperature rather than cold,
Refer to the Service Procedure below.
NOTE:
It is IMPORTANT that both parts of the Service Procedure be followed and completed fully.
SERVICE PROCEDURE SUMMARY
The Service Procedure has two steps:
Part A - Check the Park/Neutral Switch Adjustment, adjust if necessary.
Part B - Adjust the Automatic Transmission Control Cable, at the Slotted Transmission Control Arm. Remove any play or "slack" in the cable.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verity the incident.
Part A - Check the Park/Neutral Switch Adjustment:
1. Place the gear shift selector lever in Park (P) position.
2. Remove the transmission control cable from the slotted transmission control arm (see Figure 1).
3. Shift the slotted transmission control arm (see Figures 1 and 2) into Neutral (N) position.
4. Check the adjustment of the Park/Neutral Switch by inserting a 4 mm (5/32") dowel pin into the adjustment holes of the transmission control arm and Park/Neutral Switch (see Figure 2).
Use the "chuck end" of a 4 mm (5/32) drill bit if a dowel pin is not available.
5. It the 4 mm (5/32") dowel pin cannot be inserted, adjust the Park/Neutral Switch as follows:
A. Loosen the 3 bolts that fasten the Park/Neutral Switch (See Figure 2).
B. Rotate the Park/Neutral switch as required to insert the 4 mm (5/32") dowel pin (see Figure 2).
C. Tighten the 3 bolts that fasten the Park/Neutral Switch.
6. Proceed to Part B and complete Part B - Adjust and Remove Play from the Transmission Control Cable.
Part B - Adjust and Remove Play from the Transmission Control Cable:
1. Shift the transmission lever into Park (P) position.
2. Re-attach the transmission control cable to the slotted transmission control arm. "Loosely assemble" (do not tighten yet) the lock nut (see Figure 3).
Note:
The hole on the transmission control arm is slotted (see Figures 2 and 3). This will allow for adjustment of the transmission control cable.
3. Perform the following steps:
^ Push up on the transmission control cable (see arrows in Figure 4). This will remove all the play.
^ Lightly hold finger pressure on the cable end to keep it in that position (see Figure 4).
^ While maintaining this light upward pressure on the cable end, tighten the lock nut to 8-10 ft-lbs (11-14 Nm, 1.1-1.5 kg-m) - see Figure 4.
4. Verify the gear shift selector lever operates freely.
5. Confirm the engine cranks in both Park (P) and Neutral (N) position.
