2002 MAXIMA MIL "ON" WITH DTC P0228 AND/OR P1228
(ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR) STORED

APPLIED VEHICLE:
2002 Maxima (A33)

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 2002 Maxima has the following symptom(s):

^ MIL "ON" with DTC P0228 (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 1 Circuit High Input) stored in the ECM,

And/Or

^ MIL "ON" with DTC P1228 (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 2 Circuit High Input) stored in the ECM,

The cause may be the Accelerator Pedal Stopper.

Use the Service Procedure provided in this bulletin to verity DTC P0228 and/or P1228 is stored and install a replacement Accelerator Pedal Stopper, if required (see PARTS INFORMATION for further information).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Use CONSULT-II to confirm that one or both of the codes listed in the Service Information section are stored in "Self Diagnosis Results".





2. Inspect the Accelerator Pedal Stopper to determine which version of Accelerator Pedal is installed (see Figure 1 for location of the Accelerator Pedal Stopper and examples of Version A and Version B of the Accelerator Pedal Stopper).

^ If a Version A Accelerator Pedal Stopper (see Figure 1) is installed, remove it by unscrewing the Pedal Stopper Attachment Screw. Install the Version B Accelerator Pedal Stopper listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section, below.

^ If a Version B Accelerator Pedal Stopper (see Figure 1) is installed, this bulletin does not apply. Use the Diagnostic Procedure for DIC P0228 and/or P1228 from the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) to further investigate.

3. Use CONSULT-II to erase DTC P0228 and/or P1228 from "Self Diagnosis Results."

4. With ignition "ON" but with engine not running, fully depress the accelerator to the floor in Wide Open Throttle and hold for 5 seconds.

5. Use CONSULT-II to check if DTC P0228 and/or P1228 is stored in "Self Diagnosis Results."

^ If the code(s) is not stored, the procedure is complete.

^ If the code(s) is stored, use the Diagnostic Procedure for DTC P0228 and/or P1228 from the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) to further investigate.
