2002-2005 ALTIMA; A/T SHIFTER HARD TO OPERATE
This bulletin amends NTB03-004. This version amends the Applied Vehicles. Please discard all previous copies of this bulletin.
APPLIED VEHICLE:
2002 - 2005 Altima (L31) - with 4 speed A/T only
IF YOU CONFIRM:
^ The All shift selector is hard to move between shift selector positions, or
^ The indicator assembly Sliding Plate is deformed, bent or otherwise mis-shaped,
ACTION:
^ Replace the A/T indicator assembly Sliding Plate (see Figure 1).
IMPORTANT:
The purpose of "ACTION" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

Submit a Primary Failed Part (PP) line claim using the claims coding shown.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
Use appropriate covers to protect upholstery, carpet, etc. when performing the following procedure.
1. Remove the A/T shift knob by turning it counter-clockwise (see Figure 2).
2. Remove the A/T shift selector bezel.
^ Refer to section IP in the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for bezel removal information.
3. Remove A/T selector guide as follows:
a. Move the A/T selector guide illumination lamp wires out from under the wire guide pin (see Figure 3a).
b. Lift up on the All selector guide to "nap" loose the four (4) retaining clips, one at each corner.
c. Lift the A/T selector guide up and over the All shift lever (see Figure 3b).
d. Reposition the All selector guide on the driver's side of the center floor console (see Figure 3c).
4. Remove the Sliding Plate by lifting it up and over the shift lever (see Figure 4).
5. Clean any material, such as soda, that may have been spilled on or in the shift selector.
6. Install a new indicator assembly Sliding Plate-listed in the Parts Information (see Figure 4).
CAUTION:
Make sure the Sliding Plate is installed in the correct direction: "F" towards the front, "R" towards the rear.
6. Reinstall the A/T selector guide.
a. Confirm the shift selector is in the "P" position
b. Position the A/T selector guide over the A/T selector lever and just above the Sliding Plate.
c. Thread the Sliding Plate through the siding guide opening on the front of the A/T Selector Guide (see Figure 5).
d. Snap the A/T shift selector guide back into its original position.
7. Make sure the shift selector moves smoothly to each position.
8. Re-install the A/T shift selector bezel
9. Apply a few drops of High Temp High Strength Threadlocker Red to A/T shift selector lever threads (see Figure 6).
^ Threadlocker is listed in the Parts Information.
10. Reinstall the Shift Knob.
