Removal
Components
CAUTION:
^ When installing camshafts, chain tensioners, oil seals, or other sliding parts, lubricate contacting surfaces with new engine oil.
^ Apply new engine oil to threads and seat surfaces when installing cylinder head, camshaft sprocket, crankshaft pulley, and camshaft bracket.
^ Attach tags to valve lifters so as not to mix them up.
Removal
1. Remove engine undercover.
2. Drain engine oil.
3. Drain engine coolant from radiator.
4. Remove radiator.
5. Remove front exhaust tube and its support.
6. Set a suitable transmission jack under transaxle and hoist engine with engine slinger.
7. Remove crankshaft position sensor (POS) from oil pan.
8. Remove front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts.
9. Remove center member.
10. Remove aluminum oil pan.
11. Remove exhaust manifolds.
12. Install center member to support engine temporarily.
13. Install front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts.
14. Remove transmission jack and hoist that were supporting engine.
15. Remove timing chain.
16. Remove intake manifold in reverse order of installation.
17. Remove water outlet.
18. Remove rear timing chain case bolts.
^ Loosen in reverse order as shown in the figure.
19. Remove rear timing chain case.
20. Remove O-rings from cylinder head.
21. Remove O-rings from cylinder block.
22. Remove intake valve timing control solenoid valves.
23. Remove intake and exhaust camshafts and camshaft brackets.
^ Equally loosen camshaft bracket bolts in several steps in the numerical order shown in the figure.
For reinstallation, be sure to put marks on camshaft bracket before removal.
24. Remove RH and LH camshaft chain tensioners from cylinder head.
25. Remove cylinder head bolts.
^ Cylinder head bolts should be loosened in two or three steps.
^ A warped or cracked cylinder head could result from removing in incorrect order.
26. Remove cylinder head.
