2002-2005 SENTRA; 2-3 SHIFT "CHIRP" NOISE

APPLIED VEHICLE(S):
2002-2005 Sentra (B15)

APPLIED ENGINE #(S):
QG18DE

APPLIED TRANSMISSION #:
RE4FO3B

IF YOU CONFIRM

If one of the Applied Vehicles has a "chirp" noise as the automatic transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear, particularly when accelerating the vehicle with only 1/8 throttle applied, the noise may be coming from the high clutch assembly during operation.

ACTION

This noise can be eliminated by adding two bottles (200cc each) of Automatic Transmission Fluid Treatment to the transmission. That would be a total of 400cc added. Follow the procedure outlined to confirm and resolve the incident, should it occur.

PARTS INFORMATION

NOTE:
^ The Automatic Transmission Fluid Treatment is available from the Nissan Direct Ship Chemical Care Product Program.

^ This product is intended for use by Nissan dealership personnel only and is not to be used outside the dealership or sold to consumers.

CLAIMS INFORMATION

IMPORTANT:
The purpose of "ACTIONS" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Confirm incident. The symptom, if it should occur, usually happens when upshifting with light to moderate throttle application. After confirming the incident, continue to drive the vehicle until the engine is at operating temperature.

2. Check the Automatic Transmission fluid level:

a. Park vehicle on a level surface, put the A/T gear selector lever in "P", set the parking brake, and leave the engine idling.

b. Remove the All dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free paper.

c. Re-insert the dipstick into the dipstick tube as far as it will go.

d. Remove the dipstick and note the fluid level reading.

WARNING:
Before adding the treatment, the fluid level must be at least one pint BELOW the TOP of the "HOT" range on the dipstick. Check the fluid at operating temperatures of 50° to 80°C (122° to 176°F).

3. Stop the engine. If fluid needs to be drained, allow the vehicle to cool and drain the fluid level to the correct amount before going to step 4.

4. Add two (2) bottles (200cc each, 400cc total) of ATF Treatment (P/N 31003-31X61P) by pouring it down the dipstick tube.

CAUTION:
The ATF Treatment bottles come packed in oil absorbent material. Wipe the bottles clean before use to prevent this material from entering the transmission.

5. Start the engine, re-check the fluid level and add or drain automatic transmission fluid as needed.

CAUTION:
Do NOT overfill the transmission.

6. Drive the vehicle for approximately five miles to circulate the ATF Treatment throughout the transmission.

7. Confirm that the chirp noise is gone.

8. Take the vehicle maintenance log and make a note that ATF Treatment was added to the transmission. Also note the date and mileage.
