2003-2004 SENTRA WITH QG18DE; MIL ON
DTC P0442 / P0456 (EVAP SMALL/VERY SMALL LEAK)
This bulletin amends NTB03-041. This version amends the Applied Vehicle and Service Procedure information.
Please discard all paper copies of the earlier versions.
APPLIED VEHICLE:
2003 - 2004 Sentra (B15) with QG18DE engine *
* Engine ECM part number must match one listed in Chart A.
IF YOU CONFIRM:
A MIL "ON" with the following DTC(s) stored:
^ P0442 EVAP Control System (EVAP Small Leak), or
^ P0456 EVAP Control System (EVAP Very Small Leak).
ACTIONS:
A. Confirm this bulletin applies:
^ Check the Current ECM Part Number.
^ Compare your Current ECM Part Number to those listed in Chart A.
If your ECM P/N is not listed, this bulletin does not apply. Go back to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair information.
B. Reprogram the ECM.
C. If needed (as specified by chart A), perform Idle Air Volume Learning-IAVL.
D. Perform DTC Confirmation to confirm there are no EVAP system leaks.
IMPORTANT:
The purpose of "ACTION" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.
CLAIMS INFORMATION
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Step A: Confirm This Bulletin Applies
1. With CONSULT-II "ON", print the Freeze Frame data as follows:
2. Attach this printout to the Repair Order.
^ Figure 1 is an example of the F.F. Data printout.
^ The Freeze Frame data that you've printed contains the ECM Part Number (P/N).
^ The ECM part number will be used to see if this bulletin applies or not.
3. Check the ECM Part Number on the printout from Step 1 (Figure 1);
> Compare your vehicle's ECM P/N to those shown under Current ECM P/N in Chart A,:
> If your vehicle's ECM P/N is listed in the chart below:
a. Look under the Select # column, write down the 2-digit number that matches your vehicle ECM-if applicable.
b. Perform ECM Reprogramming, then
c. Perform DTC Confirmation.
> If your vehicle's ECM P/N is not listed in the chart:
^ This bulletin does not apply. Go to ASIST for further diagnostic and repair information.
Chart A
IMPORTANT:
^ Some States that have traditionally required California emissions may have both CAL SULEV and 50-State Emissions Level vehicles.
^ Refer to the Current ECM P/N to properly determine the vehicle configuration.
NOTE:
^ Some of the Vehicle Configurations may have 2 different Reprogramming Data choices in ASIST, depending on the Current ECM P/N.
^ When there is more than 1 choice for a particular configuration, an ASIST Data Select # will show before the "To" number in ASIST.
^ In that case, use the ASIST Data Select # to choose the appropriate Reprogramming Data from ASIST.
Step B: REPROGRAM the ECM
ECM Reprogramming Overview
^ There are four basic steps (tasks) under Step B:
1. Download (transfer) reprogramming data from ASIST into CONSULT-II.
2. "Preparation" steps before reprogramming ECM.
3. Reprogram the ECM.
4. "Wrap-up" after ECM reprogramming is finished.
NOTE:
This will link you to the "ECM Reprogramming For Nissan Vehicles" general procedure.
^ For those familiar with ECM Reprogramming, please review the following steps and use them as a Quick Reference for ECM reprogramming.
Step One: Download (Transfer) Reprogramming Data From ASIST Into CONSULT-II
1. Using your ASIST terminal and "mouse", "click on" (select) the vehicle model and model year (Example: Sentra, 2004).
2. Select the correct reprogramming data:
a. Locate the specific "Model Configuration" (Example: M/T, ASCD).
NOTE:
Model Configuration may include items such as engine type, transmission type, and vehicle options such as ASCD, ICS, ABS etc.
b. Select (click on) the "To" number.
NOTE:
The "To" number will read: 23710-XXXXX.
3. Click on the "Add" button.
This will add the data you selected to the "File(s) Selected" list.
4. Write the "To" number on the Repair Order.
5. Click on "Continue" and follow directions to perform "data transfer" (download) the data from ASIST into CONSULT-II.
Step Two: Preparation Steps Before Reprogramming ECM
1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle's battery.
Set the charger to a low charge rate (trickle charge).
CAUTION:
For steps 2 and 3, DO NOT connect the CONSULT-II A/C Power Supply
(see Figure B).
2. Press [SUB MODE] (see Figure C) then:
a. From the listed items, find and select [BATTERY CHARGE].
3. Check the CONSULT-II's "Charger Input" reading (see Figure D).
NOTE:
"Battery Voltage" is the voltage level of CONSULT-II's battery.
"Charger Input" is the voltage level of the vehicle's battery. (It must be above 12 volts.)
CAUTION:
If the "Charger Input" is below 12 volts:
^ There is a list of items to check. This list is in the "ECM Reprogramming For Nissan Vehicles" general procedure.
Step Three: Reprogram the ECM
^ This will link you back to a general procedure called "ECM Reprogramming For Nissan Vehicles."
Step Four: "Wrap-up" After Reprogramming is Finished
1. Turn the ignition switch "OFF" and CONSULT-II "OFF".
2. Wait more than 10 seconds, then;
a. Turn the ignition switch "ON" for 2 second, then
b. Turn the ignition switch "OFF" again for 10 seconds (see Figure E).
^ This will reset ECM "Self learned" Data.
3. Make sure the MIL is OFF.
^ If the MIL comes ON, use CONSULT-II with the Diagnostic (red/white) Card to erase any DTC's that may have stored during the reprogramming procedure.
Step C: If needed, perform Idle Air Volume Learning-IAVL.
1. Determine if your vehicle needs IAVL performed:
a. Go back to Chart A.
b. Locate the "Current ECM P/N" that matched your vehicle.
c. Look in the right side column titled "Perform IAVL."
Yes: Go to step 2, perform IAVL
No: Don't perform IAVL, go to Step D.
2. Perform Idle Air Volume Learning (IAVL).
^ refer to it in the print copy of this bulletin.
Step D: Perform DTC Confirmation
1. Perform the DTC Confirmation for the code that was stored in your vehicle; P0442 or P0456.
^ For instructions on how to do this, go to the EC section of the appropriate Service Manual.
a. If the results are OK (no DTC is stored), this repair is complete, your finished.
b. If the results are NG (DTC is stored):
^ The system has an additional incident (leak in the system) that isn't covered in this bulletin.
^ Go to ASIST for diagnostic and repair information for this additional incident.
