Service Procedure
SERVICE PROCEDURENOTE:
Use appropriate covers to protect upholstery, carpet, etc. when performing the following procedure.
1. Remove the A/T shift knob by turning it counterclockwise (see Figure 1).
2. Reach under the climate control bezel and pull it toward you to snap it loose.
3. Disconnect the warning lamp.
4. 1st: Lift UP on the rear corners of the shift finisher to snap it loose, 2nd: Pull it toward you to remove it.
5. Disconnect the finisher harness.
6. Remove the 2 screws shown in Figure 6.
7. Remove the A/T selector guide as follows:
a. Lift (pull) UP on the A/T selector guide to snap loose the 4 clips.
b. Lift the A/T selector guide up and over the A/T shift lever (see Figure 7a).
c. Flip the A/T selector upside down and disconnect the illumination bulb (see Figure 7b).
8. Remove the shifter slide cover by lifting it UP and off the shift lever (see Figure 8).
CAUTION:
Note the "F" (front) and "R" (rear) on the shifter slide cover. Make sure to install it correctly during assembly.
9. Remove the A/T shift cable retaining clip (see Figure 9).
10. Disconnect the A/T shift cable from the A/T shift assembly as follows:
a. Pull/push the A/T shift cable "end socket" off of the ball stud (see Figure 10a).
^ Pull/push it towards the right side (passenger side) of the vehicle.
b. Pull the A/T shift cable out of the A/T shift assembly (see Figure 10b).
12. Disconnect the shift assembly harness.
13. Remove the 4 bolts shown in Figure 11, and then remove the shift assembly.
14. Turn the shift assembly upside down and look at the lever arm slot shown in Figure 12.
15. See if the original rubber bumper is there, or if it is missing.
a. You may find a metal plate with rubber stopper covering the lever arm slot which holds the rubber bumper (see Figures 13a and 13b).
b. If needed, remove the metal plate with rubber stopper so you can check the rubber bumper. Its held on with one screw as shown in Figure 13b.
c. If the rubber bumper is missing, install a Noise Damper Kit.

^ Kit includes rubber bumper, rubber stopper, metal plate, and screw.

d. If the rubber bumper was in place-not missing, but there is no rubber stopper, install a Noise Damper Kit.

16. Remove the existing rubber bumper from the lever arm slot by pulling it down and out with a pair of needle nose pliers (see Figure 14a).
17. Install the new rubber bumper in the lever arm slot (see Figure 14b).
^ Apply a small amount of Silicone Adhesive Sealant to the rubber bumper to glue it in place.
18. Attach the rubber stopper onto the metal plate (see Figure 15a).
19. Install the metal plate (with rubber stopper) on the A/T shift assembly with one screw (see Figure 15b).
^ Make sure the locating pins on the A/T shift assembly are aligned with the corresponding holes on the metal plate (see Figure 15b).
20. Re-install the A/T shift assembly in the reverse order.
21. Was the rubber bumper missing when you checked it in step 15?
Yes; bumper was missing - this repair is complete.
No; bumper was not missing - replace the A/T shift lock control unit (see Figure 16).
