SERVICE INFORMATION

When installing a TCM (Transmission Control Module), CVT or 5 Speed A/T on an applied vehicle, initialize the TCM under the following conditions:

CVT equipped vehicles:

The TCM needs to be initialized when:

^ Replacing the CVT or the Valve Body assy and not the TCM

^ Installing / swapping a TCM from another vehicle

5 Speed A/T equipped vehicles:

The TCM needs to be initialized when:

^ Replacing the Automatic Transmission and not the TCM

^ Installing / swapping a TCM from another vehicle

NOTE:
If initialization is not performed, the shift feel may be more pronounced after either of the above services.

Refer to the Service Procedure for initialization steps.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

For the initialization procedures in this bulletin:

^ Use CONSULT-II for 2006 and older vehicles.

^ Use C-III for 2007 and newer vehicles (except Quest)

^ For Quest, use CONSULT-II

CVT equipped vehicles:

The TCM needs to be initialized when:

^ Replacing the CVT or the Valve Body assy and not the TCM

^ Installing / swapping a TCM from another vehicle

NOTE:
The procedure is not necessary when installing a new TCM.

1. Set the parking brake.

2. Connect CONSULT (II or III) to the vehicle and turn the ignition ON (engine OFF-not running).

3. Navigate CONSULT screens to Transmission.

4. Select and print the Calibration Data and save a copy.

NOTE:
For C-III; calibration data is under Special Functions.

5. Perform the EEPROM erase procedure as follows:

a. Select Transmission Self Diagnostic Results.

b. Shift the selector lever to R.

c. Press and hold the brake pedal.

d. Press and hold the accelerator pedal down about one-third, but no more than halfway. (The need here is to hold the throttle open just enough so the closed throttle position signal is OFF and the wide open throttle position signal is also OFF.)

e. Press Erase.

f. Shift the selector lever to P.

g. Turn the ignition OFF.

h. Wait 5 seconds.

i. Turn the ignition ON.

6. Select and print the Calibration Data again.

7. Compare the values between the first and second Calibration Data prints.

^ The procedure is complete if the values are different.

5 Speed A/T equipped vehicles:

The TCM needs to be initialized when:

^ Replacing the Automatic Transmission (A/T) and not the TCM

^ Installing / swapping a TCM from another vehicle

NOTE:
The procedure is not necessary when installing a new TCM.

1. Connect CONSULT-II to the vehicle and turn the ignition ON.

2. Navigate the CONSULT screens to A/T.

3. Make sure the shift selector is in P.

4. Select WORK SUPPORT and than INITIALIZATION.

^ Initialization is complete.

5. Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect CONSULT.

NOTE:
After INITIALIZATION, the TCM will, over time, optimize the shift quality (self learning). The learning phase may vary in duration, depending on the driver's habits. The more often the vehicle is driven through all the gears in various conditions (light acceleration, sportier driving, coasting), the faster the TCM will accumulate data.
