ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT NOISE

APPLIED VEHICLE:
2000-05 Sentra (B15) with QG18DE Engine

APPLIED DATE:
Vehicles built before July 9, 2005

IF YOU CONFIRM:

An applied vehicle has a chirp or squealing noise coming from the drive belt area as described below:

^ A chirp noise occurs at start-up in the morning especially in cold or damp conditions.

^ A squealing noise occurs at idle and low engine speeds. As the engine speed increases, the squealing noise goes away.

ACTION:

^ Replace the alternator drive belt with the one listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.

^ Refer to the Service Procedure for the specific drive belt adjustment tension (for "New Belt") and tightening torques.

IMPORTANT DRIVE BELT TENSION INFORMATION:

After you install the new drive belt:

^ First, adjust it to the specified tension (for "New Belt").

^ Second, turn the crankshaft two or more turns to set the drive belt into the pulley grooves.

^ Then, re-adjust to the specified tension (for "New Belt").

^ It is critical to use a belt tension gauge when adjusting the belt tension. Belt tension that is out of specification can result in the eventual degradation of the drive belt material causing future noise complaints.

^ The Kent-Moore part number for the belt tension gauge is BT-3373-F.
