Service Procedure
IMPORTANT:Before starting, make sure:
^ ASIST on the C-III computer has been freshly synchronized (updated).
^ All C-III software updates (if any) have been installed.
NOTE:
The C-III computer automatically gets applicable ECM reprogramming data during ASIST synchronization.
^ C-III PCMCIA Card Adapter is installed.
^ C-III Security Card is installed.
^ A screen print for Warranty documentation can be done from C-III during this process while still cable-connected to the vehicle.
1. Use the USB cable to connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the C-III computer and then connect the VI to the vehicle.
CAUTION
2. Connect the AC Adapter to the C-III computer.
CAUTION
3. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle battery:
^ Use the GR-8 - Battery and Electrical Diagnostic Station in "Power Supply Mode".
^ If needed, refer to Hybrid Service TSBs for connecting the GR-8 to the Hybrid 12V battery.
NOTE:
When the GR-8 is in power supply mode, "CHARGING" will flash at the top of the screen, and "POWER SUPPLY MODE" is displayed at the bottom of the screen (see Figure B).
CAUTION
4. Turn the ignition ON with engine OFF.
^ Make sure the dash warning lights are ON and the "READY" light is OFF
^ The engine must be OFF (not running) during the reprogramming procedure.
^ Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads such as exterior lights, interior lights, HVAC, blower, rear defogger, audio, NAVI, seat heater, steering wheel heater, etc.
CAUTION
5. Make sure the engine cooling fan(s) are not running.
If the cooling fans are running:
a. Turn the ignition OFF.
b. Wait for the engine to cool.
c. Turn the ignition ON (with engine OFF).
d. Make sure the engine cooling fans are not running.
6. Open / start ASIST on the C-III computer.
7. Select CONSULT Utilities, CONSULT-III, and Wait for the "Detecting VI/MI in progress" message to clear.
8. Select the detected VI from the list. (See Figure 1.)
9. Select Connect
10. Wait for the "Checking the firmware version" message to clear.
11. Select ECM reprogramming / Programming
12. Select Select
NOTE:
Step 13 is important.
13. Make sure the VIN displayed on the C-III screen is correct (see Figure 3).
a. From the windshield VIN plate; write down the VIN for the vehicle you are working on.
b. Compare the VIN you wrote down to the VIN displayed on the C-III screen (see Figure 3).
c. Do the VINs match? YES NO (circle one)
NOTE:
If the answer is NO (the VIN is missing or the displayed digits are not the correct VIN) you will need to perform VIN Registration before step 17.
14. Select Confirm
15. Select Diagnosis
16. Wait for ECM Diagnosis to complete and make sure no DTCs are stored.
^ If there are any DTCs: diagnose, perform repairs, and erase DTCs before continuing. Diagnosis and repair of DTCs is not covered by this bulletin.
Determine if VIN registration is needed:
If YES was circled in step 13, skip to step 17. VIN Registration is not needed.
If NO was circled in step 13, Perform VIN Registration and then proceed with step 17.
VIN Registration
A. Select Direct Diagnostic Mode icon.
B. Select System Diagnosis
C. Select Engine
D. Select OK
E. Select Work Support
F. Select VIN Registration
G. Select "Next"
H. Make sure the dash warning lights are ON and the "READY" light is OFF (ignition ON engine OFF).
I. Select Start
J. Enter the VIN into C-III two times (see Figure 12).
^ Use the VIN from the vehicle you are working on (you wrote it down in step 13).
^ Make sure to use all CAPITAL LETTERS.
^ Touch the C-III screen in the VIN box before typing.
K. Select Start
L. Turn the ignition OFF, and wait 10 seconds.
^ Press the ignition button 1 time to turn the ignition OFF.
M. After waiting 10 seconds, turn the ignition ON.
^ Press the ignition button 2 times (with foot off brake) to turn ignition ON.
^ Make sure the dash warning lights are ON and the "READY" light is OFF (ignition ON engine OFF).
N. Select OK
0. Select Direct Diagnostic Mode Icon
P. Wait for ECM Diagnosis to complete and make sure no DTCs are stored.
^ If there are any DTCs: diagnose, perform repairs, and erase DTCs before continuing. Diagnosis and repair of DTCs is not covered by this bulletin.
17. Select Repair icon
18. Select the ECM Reprogram icon
19. Confirm this bulletin/campaign applies to your vehicle as follows:
A. On your C-III screen, look at the Part Number column (see Figure 18 example):
^ If this column is blank (no part number listed), this bulletin/campaign does not apply or has already been completed.
B. Compare the Part Number in the Part Number column to the Current Part Number in Table A above.
^ If there is a match, this bulletin/campaign applies. Continue with the reprogramming procedure.
^ If there is not a match, this bulletin/campaign does not apply or it has already been completed.
20. Select Next
NOTE:
If the screen in Figure 19 appears, there is data stored in the VI. Select Yes to proceed with Reprogramming.
21. The screen in Figure 20 is displayed during data transfer.
CAUTION:
During data transfer:
^ DO NOT disturb the VI, DDL, or USB connections.
^ DO NOT try to start the engine or turn the ignition OFF.
^ The engine fans may turn on. This is normal.
NOTE:
If "Transfer To VI" reaches 100%, and "Transfer To ECU" does not start,
a. DO NOT replace the ECM. The ECM is not damaged.
b. Check / make sure the battery voltage is above 11V and all vehicle electrical loads are turned OFF (see step 3 and 4).
c. Select Cancel Data Transmission, then click on the "Home" icon (upper left corner of C-III screen) and re-start from the beginning (step 1).
22. When the screen in Figure 21 appears, ECM reprogramming is complete.
Print this screen and attach it to the Repair Order for Warranty documentation.
NOTE:
If you can't print the above screen:
a. Select the Print icon.
b. Select Save.
c. Select OK.
A copy of the screen is now saved in the C-III computer.
NOTE:
If you saved a copy of the screen in Figure 21 and need to print it at a later date, you can find it in the following file location:
At the bottom left corner of the computer screen click on Start.
In the Administrator window select My Computer.
In the My Computer screen select Local Disc (C).
In the Local Disc (C) screen select Consult III folder.
In the Consult III screen/folder select Application Data folder.
In the ApplicationData screen/folder select PrintImages folder.
When the file was saved it was automatically given a file name using the current date and time. Select and print the file/screen image that you want.
NOTE:
During reprogramming DTCs will set in several systems. DTCs must be erased from all systems.
Erase DTCs from all systems
23. Click on the Home icon.
24. Wait for the "Detecting VI/MI in progress" message to clear.
25. Select the detected VI from the list.
26. Select Connect.
27. Wait for the "Checking the firmware version" message to clear.
28. Select ALTIMA Hybrid and correct Model Year from the list.
29. Select Select
30. Make sure VIN, Vehicle Name, and Model Year are correct.
31. Select Confirm
32. Select Diagnosis
33. Wait for System Call to complete and CAN Diagnosis to reach 51 %.
When the CAN diagnosis reaches 51%, the process icons in the Process Guide Area at the top of the screen will light (become enabled).
34. When the icons light, click on the Final Check icon.
35. CAN diagnosis will run again. When it reaches 51 % and the icons light, click on the Duplication Test icon.
36. When the screen in Figure 29 appears, select All Erase.
37. Select Yes
38. Use the scroll bar to scroll down the page and make sure all DTCs are erased.
^ For any DTCs that do not erase; diagnose, perform repairs, and erase DTCs. Diagnosis and repair of DTCs is not covered by this bulletin.
39. Close C-III, turn the ignition OFF, and disconnect the VI.
