Fuel System - Erratic Fuel Gauge/DTCs P0461-P0463

This bulletin has been amended. APPLIED VEHICLE, ACTION, PARTS INFORMATION, and the SERVICE PROCEDURE have been updated. Please discard all previous copies.

APPLIED VEHICLE: 2007-2011 Sentra (B16)

IF YOU CONFIRM:

The fuel gauge is erratic

And / Or

The MIL is "ON" with DTC P0461, P0462, or P0463 stored in Self-Diagnosis.

ACTION:

1. For vehicles built before 3N1(*)B6AP(*)BL 670864 and January 7, 2011:

^ Replace the complete fuel pump module.

> Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) if needed.

2. For vehicles built on or after the VIN and date stated above:

^ Replace the fuel level sensor unit.

^ Refer to the SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this bulletin for repair procedure.

3. Use the applied parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

4. For vehicles built on or after the VIN and date stated above: Do not replace the entire fuel pump module assembly for this incident, if it should occur.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. For vehicles built before 3N1(*)B6AP(*)BL 670864 and January 7, 2011: Replace the "fuel level sensor, fuel filter, and fuel pump assembly" (module).

^ Refer to the ESM, if needed.

2. For vehicles built on or after the VIN and date stated above

OR

For vehicles built before the VIN and date stated above AND the module was previously replaced with #17040-9AA0A:

^ Replace the fuel level sensor.

> Go to Fuel Level Sensor Removal below.

Fuel Level Sensor Removal

1. Remove the module.

^ Refer to the appropriate section of the ESM, if needed.

NOTE:
Perform repairs in a clean work environment.








2. Remove the 3 wire terminals with red, white, and double-wire black wires from under the top of the module as shown in Figure 1 and 2.

NOTE:
The white wire may appear yellowish in color.

^ Press the tab in and then gently pull the wire off its terminal (see Figure 2).





3. Remove all wires from under both retention features on the module (see Figure 3 and 4).





4. Remove the fuel tank temperature sensor (temp sensor) from its retention feature. See Figure 5.





5. Remove the fuel level sensor (level sensor) from the module. See Figure 6.

^ While pushing the tab inward (1), push the level sensor up (2), and then pull the level sensor away from the module.

Fuel Level Sensor Installation

1. Install the new level sensor onto the module (no picture shown).





^ Perform Step 5 shown in "Fuel Level Sensor Removal" in reverse, making sure its tab locks into place (see Figure 7).





2. Install the temp sensor into its retention feature (see Figure 8).





3. Install the four (4) wires into the first retention feature as shown in Figure 9.





4. Route the same wiring as shown in Figure 10).





5. Install the wiring into the second retention feature as shown in Figure 11.





6. Install the wires to the correct terminals as shown in Figure 12.

^ Route the wiring on the outside of the fuel line as shown in Figure 13.

^ Make sure the tabs are securely locked.

7. Re-install the module with a new packing (o-ring seal).

^ Refer to the ESM for installation procedure, if needed.
