Service Procedure
SERVICE PROCEDUREIMPORTANT:
Follow all cautions, warnings, and notes in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) when working on or near a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), such as an air bag.
1. Write down all radio station presets.
2. Disconnect both battery cables (negative cable first).
3. Wait at least 3 minutes after the negative battery cable is disconnected before proceeding with step 4 below.
4. Unbolt the seat and disconnect the airbag harness.
5. Remove the headrest.
6. Remove the seat from the vehicle and place it upright on a clean surface.
7. Remove the LH and RH side seat finishers.
For Sentra perform the following:
NOTE:
For Versa, below.
a. Remove the covers from the adjusting lever and recline lever.
b. Remove the five bolts attaching the adjusting lever to the seat. The bolts are underneath the adjusting lever cover.
c. Remove the recline lever.
d. Carefully pull off the LH finisher.
e. Carefully remove the RH side finisher.
For Versa perform the following:
a. Remove the covers from the adjusting lever and recline lever.
b. Remove the adjusting lever held in place with three screws. See Figure 2.
c. Remove the recline lever held in place with one clip. See Figure 3.
d. Carefully remove the RH finisher.
e. Carefully pull the front part of the LH finisher away from the seat.
^ Using a trim tool, release the rear part of the finisher from the seat. See Figure 4.
^ Carefully pull off the finisher.
8. Unzip both sides of the seat back trim as shown in Figure 5.
9. Separate the recliner cloth covers on the LH and RH side to expose the recliner mechanisms.
10. Spray white lithium grease between the seat back frame and the recliner mechanism on both LH and RH sides of the seat. See Figures 7 and 8.
11. Place the seat onto its back and remove the slide release handle from the LH and RH holder brackets.
a. Use a screwdriver the push back the spring shown in Figure 9b.
b. While doing this, lift up the slide release handle to disengage it from the holder bracket.
c. Repeat steps 11a and 11b on the other holder bracket.
12. Apply silicone grease to the areas where Spring 1 contacts:
^ the seat frame
^ the holder bracket
^ See Figures 10 and 11.
13. Apply silicone grease to the bottom part of the holder bracket, in the location shown in Figure 11.
14. Apply silicone grease to the holder bracket:
^ in the areas where Spring 2 makes contact. See Figure 12.
^ in the areas where the slide release handle makes contact. See Figure 13.
15. Repeat steps 12-14 on the other holder bracket.
16. Apply silicone grease to the LH and RH sides of the slide release handle, in the locations shown in Figure 14.
17. Reinstall the slide release handle into the holder brackets.
^ Push down the slide release handle until it latches.
18. Move the slide release handle side to side and back and forth to work in the grease.
19. Wipe off any excess grease.
NOTE:
Perform steps 20 and 21 only if the seat is equipped with lifter mechanism.
20. Spray the LH and RH front cross tube linkages with white lithium grease.
21. Spray white lithium grease on the lifter linkages located on the RH and LH sides of the seat.
22. Reassemble and reinstall the seat in reverse order of removal.
23. Repeat the procedure on the other front seat, if needed.
24. Reconnect the airbag harness.
25. Reconnect the battery cables (positive side first).
26. Reprogram the radio station presets.
27. Re-initialize the automatic sunroof and power windows. See the Owner's Manual for details.
28. Confirm the incident has been resolved.
