ECM Reprogramming Recovery Procedure

1. Turn the ignition OFF (keep it off for at least 10 seconds).

2. Close / turn OFF the CONSULT-III program.

IMPORTANT:
Before performing any reprogramming, make sure:

^ ASIST on the C-III computer has been freshly synchronized (updated).

^ All C-III software updates (if any) have been installed.

NOTE:
The C-III computer automatically gets applicable ECM reprogramming data during ASIST synchronization.

3. Make sure the following are connected:

^ Use the USB cable to connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the C-III computer and then connect the VI to the vehicle.

CAUTION

^ Connect the AC Adapter to the C-III computer.

CAUTION

^ Connect a battery charger to the vehicle battery:

Set the battery charger at a low charge rate.

NOTE:
The GR-8 (Battery and Electrical Diagnostic Station) set to "Power Supply" mode is recommended.

CAUTION

4. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.

^ The engine must be OFF (not running) during the reprogramming procedure.

^ Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads such as exterior lights, interior lights, HVAC, blower, rear defogger, audio, NAVI, seat heater, steering wheel heater, etc.

CAUTION

NOTE:
It is likely that the engine cooling fans will come ON when the ignition is turned ON. If the fans are running, they will continue to run the entire time you are performing the reprogramming recovery procedure.

5. Open/start ASIST on the C-III computer, then select CONSULT Utilities > CONSULT III

6. Wait for the "Detecting VI/MI in progress" message to clear.

7. Select the detected VI from the list.

8. Select Connect

9. Wait for the "Checking the firmware version" message to clear.

10. Select Rogue or Versa and the correct model year.

NOTE:
Do not use the "Reprogramming / Programming" selection.

11. Select Select

12. Make sure the correct vehicle is displayed on the confirmation screen.

13. Select Confirm

14. Select Repair

15. Select Direct Diagnostic Mode

16. Select Reprogramming

17. On your C-III screen, look at the Engine Part Number column (see Figure 4 example):

If this column is blank, the ECM is damaged and cannot be recovered. Install a new ECM in the vehicle and program it to the latest version.

If a Part Number is listed, select it and continue with the reprogramming recovery procedure.

NOTE:
The Engine Part Number on your C-III screen will read as:

ENGINE 23710-xxxxx to 23710-xxxxx_xxx_xxMY_Alert!_For_ECM_Recovery_Only

or

ENGINE 23710-xxxxx to 23710-xxxxx_xxx_xxx_xx_xxx_xxx_x

18. Select Next

19. During data transfer, the screen in Figure 5 is displayed.

CAUTION:
During data transfer:

^ DO NOT disturb the VI, DDL, or USB connections.

^ DO NOT try to start the engine or turn the ignition OFF.

^ The engine fans may be running. This is normal.

NOTE:
^ If "Transfer To VI" reaches 100%, and "Transfer To ECU" does not start, or

^ The error in Figure 6 displays.

a. Check / make sure the battery voltage is above 12 V and all vehicle electrical loads are turned OFF (except the engine cooling fans).

b. Select Cancel Data Transmission, then click on the "Home" icon (upper left corner of C-III screen) and try recover again (go back to Step 6).

20. When the screen in Figure 7 appears, ECM reprogramming is complete.

NOTE:
^ For recovery reprogramming, the "ECU Information" will display the same part number for both the "Old Part#" and the "New Part#".

^ If you cannot print the above screen:

a. Select the Print icon.

b. Select Save.

c. Select OK.

A copy of the screen is now saved in the C-III computer.

NOTE:
During reprogramming DTCs will set in several systems. DTCs must be erased from all systems.

21. Click on the "Home" icon (top left corner of the C-III screen).

30. Wait for System Call to complete and CAN Diagnosis to reach 51%.

When the CAN diagnosis reaches 51%, the process icons in the Process Guide Area at the top of the screen will light (become enabled).

31. When the icons light, click on the "Final Check" icon.

32. CAN diagnosis will run again. When it reaches 51% and the icons light, click on the "Duplication Test" icon.

Reprogramming is finished. Continue with the procedure below.

36. Close C-III, then turn the ignition OFF.

37. Make sure the throttle is released and your foot is NOT pressing the brake or clutch pedal;

38. Operate the ignition as shown in Figure 14.

^ The above ignition cycle will reset ECM self learned Data.

39. Start the engine and check the idle speed.

^ If idle speed is too low, perform Idle Air Volume Learning (IAVL). See the appropriate Service Manual (ESM) for this procedure.

NOTE:
If the engine will not idle, hold the engine RPM at about 2000, then slowly bring it down to an idle. IAVL can now be performed.

40. Test drive the vehicle; make sure it is operating correctly and the MIL is OFF.

^ If the MIL comes ON; diagnosis, repair, and erase DTCs.
