A/T, Starting System - Can't Remove Key With A/T In Park

VERSA; CANNOT REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION

This bulletin supersedes NTB08-071. Discard all of its copies.

APPLIED VEHICLE: 2007-2010 Versa (C11)

APPLIED TRANSMISSIONS: CVT and 4-Speed A/T

IF YOU CONFIRM:

The key cannot be removed from the ignition after the shift lever is engaged in "P" (Park) position.

ACTION:

Verify the key interlock cable is properly adjusted.

^ If out of adjustment, adjust the cable by following the SERVICE PROCEDURE in this bulletin.

^ If not out of adjustment, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnosis.

NOTE:
Do not confuse the key interlock cable with the shift control cable.

Do not replace the shift selector assembly (shifter assembly) for this incident, if it should occur.

COMPONENTS

SERVICE PROCEDURE


WARNING:
Set the parking brake before key interlock cable adjustment.

1. Place the selector lever in "N" (Neutral).

2. Remove the selector lever handle. Refer to the ESM as needed.

3. Remove the center console assembly. Refer to the ESM as needed.

4. Locate the components in Figure 1 (below) in the picture in components above.





5. Slide the slider (A) toward the casing cap (B) while pressing tabs (C) on the slider to separate the slider (A) from the adjust holder (D). See Figure 1.





6. Remove the casing cap (B; Figure 1) from the cable bracket (D; Figure 2) on the shift selector assembly.

7. Remove the key interlock cable from the key interlock rod (E). See Figure 1.

ADJUSTMENT

1. Place the selector lever in "P" (Park).

2. Turn ignition switch to "ACC" or "ON".

3. Check the key interlock cable for secure fit and proper routing to the key cylinder (no picture shown).

4. Turn ignition switch to "LOCK" position.





5. Temporarily install the adjust holder (A) to the key interlock rod (B). See Figure 3.

6. Install the casing cap (C) to the cable bracket (D) on the shift selector assembly. See Figure 3.

CAUTION:
^ Do not bend or twist the key interlock cable excessively when installing.

^ After installing the key interlock cable to the cable bracket (D) on the shift selector assembly, make sure the casing cap (C) is firmly secured in the cable bracket (D) on the shift selector assembly.

^ If the casing cap (C) is loose (less than 39.2 N [4.0 kg, 8.8 lbs] removing force), replace the key interlock cable.

^ Do not apply any side to side force to key interlock rod (B) when sliding slider (A).





7. Slide the slider (A) toward the key interlock rod (D). See Figure 4.

^ This will securely connect the adjust holder (C) with the key interlock rod (D).

CAUTION:
> Do not press the tabs when holding the slider (A).

> Do not apply any side-to-side force to the key interlock rod (D) when sliding the slider (A).

8. Before reassembling the vehicle, check key interlock operation.

9. Install the center console assembly. Refer to the ESM as needed.

10. Install the selector lever knob. Refer to the ESM as needed.

11. Check shift lock system operation.
