Shift Selector Assembly Replacement.

NOTE:
Replace the shift selector assembly only if one of the three checks shown in Repair Procedure are NG.

1. Set the parking brake.

2. Move the shift selector to Neutral:

a. Turn the ignition ON (engine OFF)

b. Press the brake pedal.

c. Move shift selector to N.

d. Turn the ignition OFF.





3. Carefully remove the shift selector handle.

NOTE:
This is the new handle. It will be reused. Don't damage it.

4. Remove the center console:





a. Make sure the parking brake lever is pulled UP.

b. Remove 2 clips at the front.

c. Slide both front seats all the way forward.

d. Remove 2 screws at the rear.

d. Slide the right front seat all the way backward and place it in the fully reclined position.

e. Slide the left front seat all the way forward and tilt the seatback to the full forward position.





e. Raise the right rear corner of the center console assembly, rotating slightly. Then lift assembly upward over the parking brake handle.

f. Disconnect the power socket connector and USB/auxiliary jack connector (if equipped) and remove center console assembly.

5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the shift selector assembly.

6. Move the shift selector to Park.





7. Disconnect the key interlock cable from the shift selector assembly:

a. Press and hold pawls (B).

b. Slide in direction of the casing cap (C).

c. Separate the adjusting holder (D) and slider (A).

(E) = Key interlock rod.





8. Remove the control cable from the CVT shift selector assembly.





9. Remove 4 mounting nuts from the shift selector assembly.

10. Render the old shift selector assembly unusable by cutting the electrical wires.

11. Install the new shift selector assembly in reverse order.

Note the following:
^ Mounting nut torque for the shift selector assembly - 5.5 Nm (0.56 k-gm, 49 in-lb).





^ When connecting the control cable, face the grooved surface of the rib UP and insert the control cable until it stops.

12. Set the parking brake and check operation of the shift control assembly as follows:

With the ignition OFF:

^ Shift selector will not move from Park.

With ignition ON:

^ Shift selector will move from Park only when the brake is pressed and the handle button is pressed.

^ Move the shift selector and check for "excessive effort," "sticking," "noise or "rattle".

^ Confirm the shift selector stops at each position with the feel of engagement when it is moved through all the positions.

^ Check whether or not the actual position of the CVT matches the position shown on the shift selector.

^ Shift selector operates as shown:





(A): Press shift selector button to operate shift selector while depressing the brake pedal.

(B): Press shift selector button to operate shift selector.

(C): Shift selector can be operated without pressing shift selector button.

^ Make sure the back-up lamps illuminate only when the shift selector is placed in the "R" position.

^ Confirm the engine can be started only when the shift selector is in the "P" and "N" positions.

^ Make sure the transaxle is locked when the shift selector is in the "P" position.

NOTE:
If needed, refer to the Service Manual, section TM, for control cable adjustment procedures.
