Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove shift linkage, lever and nut from park/neutral and back-up switch.
3. Disconnect electrical connector, then remove switch mounting screws, switch cable and nut Fig. 11.
4. If installing new switch, remove gauge pin.

INSTALLATION
1. Place shift shaft in ``Neutral,'' then align flats of shift shaft with switch.
2. When installing an old switch, proceed as follows:
a. Assemble mounting bolts-to-case, loosely, then insert a 3/32 inch maximum diameter gauge pin in service adjustment hole.
b. Rotate switch until pin drops in to a depth of 1/8 inch.
c. Install retaining bolts and nut, then connect electrical connector.
3. When installing new switch proceed as follows:
a. Install mounting bolts and tighten. If bolt holes do not align with mounting boss on transaxle, ensure shift shaft is in ``Neutral.'' Do not rotate switch. Switch is pinned in ``Neutral'' position.
b. If switch has been rotated and pin broken, install switch as described in step 2.
4. After switch installation, verify that engine will only start in PARK and NEUTRAL positions. If engine starts in any other position, adjust switch as follows:
a. Place transaxle control shifter assembly in the ``Neutral'' notch in the detent plate.
b. Loosen switch attaching screws and nut.
c. Rotate switch on shifter assembly to align service adjustment hole with carrier tang hole.
d. Insert a 3/32 maximum diameter gauge pin to a depth of 5/8 inch.
e. Tighten attaching screws and nut.
f. Remove gauge pin.
