Parking Brake System: Adjustments
Park Brake Adjustment
Important: Perform the Park Brake System Check prior to performing this procedure in order to ensure that all of the park brake system components are operating properly.
1. Apply the parking brake until three clicks are heard.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Use your hands in order to rotate both of the rear wheels.
^ If both of the rear the wheels exhibit drag or do not rotate, the park brake cable is adjusted properly, proceed to Step 8.
^ If either of the rear wheels rotate freely, proceed to Step 4.
Important: The brake linings must be adjusted prior to adjusting the park brake cable.
4. Adjust the applicable brake lining as necessary.
^ For domestic vehicles, refer to Drum Brake Adjustment.
^ For export vehicles, refer to Park Brake Shoe Inspection.
5. Tighten the park brake equalizer nut until both rear wheels exhibit drag or do not rotate.
6. Release the parking brake.
7. Verify that both rear wheels rotate freely.
8. For export vehicles, verify that the park brake actuator levers have returned to their stops (full release position). If the park brake levers do not return to their stops (full release position), adjust the park brake shoe and lining. Refer to Park Brake Shoe Inspection.
9. Lower the vehicle.
