IP Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
2. Remove the left closeout/insulator panel.
3. Remove the knee bolster trim panel.
4. Remove the knee bolster.




5. Remove the left HVAC push pin (2).
6. Remove the left HVAC floor duct (1).
7. Fully lower the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
8. Remove the shift lever bezel, Oldsmobile only.
9. Remove the center console.
10. Remove the IP lower sound insulator panel, GMC or Chevrolet only.
11. Remove the IP accessory trim plate, GMC or Oldsmobile only.
12. Remove the IP cluster bezel, Chevrolet only.
13. Remove the IP cluster.
14. Remove the right closeout/insulator panel.
15. Remove the IP storage compartment door.
16. Remove the IP compartment courtesy Lamp.
17. Remove the radio.
18. Remove the HVAC control module.




19. Remove the HVAC control module wire harness attachment (1) from the IP substrate.




20. Remove the left IP access cover.
21. Remove the headlamp switch.
22. If replacing the IP, remove the headlamp switch bezel. Refer to Trim Plate Replacement - IP Accessory Left.
23. Remove the windshield garnish moldings.
24. Remove the trim pad.
25. Remove the front upper speakers, if equipped.




26. Remove the right IP access cover.




27. Remove the side window defogger outlet screw.




28. Remove the bolts securing the lower portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.




29. Remove the bolts that secure the middle and upper portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.
30. With the aid of an assistant, lift up from the bottom of the instrument panel in order to release the IP from the positioning locators.
31. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
32. Place the IP on a clean prepared surface.
33. If replacing the IP, remove the passenger inflatable restraint IP module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
34. If replacing the IP, remove the air distribution duct vents from the instrument panel. Refer to Air Distributor Duct Replacement in HVAC.

Installation Procedure

1. If replacing the IP, install the air distribution duct vents to the instrument panel. Refer to Air Distributor Duct Replacement in HVAC.
2. If replacing the IP, install the passenger inflatable restraint module to the instrument panel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
3. With the aid of an assistant, install the instrument panel to the vehicle.

Important: Ensure the wiring harnesses and electrical connectors are not pinched behind the instrument panel and are positioned for proper connection.

4. Fully seat the instrument panel to the positioning locators.






Important: Do not tighten the IP retaining bolts until all of the bolts have been loosely installed.

5. Install the bolts securing the middle and upper portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.




6. Install the bolts that secure the lower portion of the instrument panel to the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

7. Complete the installation of all of the bolts that retain the IP to the vehicle.

Tighten the bolts to 7 N.m (62 lb in).




8. Install the side window defogger outlet screw.

Tighten the defogger outlet screw to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).




9. Install the right IP access cover.
10. Install the front upper speakers, if equipped.
11. Install the trim pad.
12. Install the windshield garnish moldings.
13. If replacing the IP, Install the headlamp switch bezel. Refer to Trim Plate Replacement - IP Accessory Left.
14. Install the headlamp switch to the bezel.




15. Install the left IP access cover.




16. Install the HVAC control module wire harness attachment to the IP substrate.
17. Install the HVAC control module.
18. Install the radio.
19. Install the IP cluster.
20. Install the IP cluster bezel, Chevrolet only.
21. Install the IP accessory trim plate, GMC or Oldsmobile only.
22. Install the IP lower sound insulator, GMC or Chevrolet only.
23. Install the center console.
24. Install the shift lever bezel, Oldsmobile only.
25. Install the IP compartment courtesy lamp.
26. Install the IP compartment door.
27. Install the right closeout/insulator panel.
28. Install the steering column.




29. Install the left HAVC floor duct (1).
30. Install the left HVAC floor duct push pin (2).
31. Install the knee bolster.
32. Install the knee bolster trim panel.
33. Install the left closeout/insulator panel.
34. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
