Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Insert a drift through the brake caliper and info one of the rotor vanes.





Important: Do nut reuse the nut. A new nut must be used when installing the wheel drive shaft.

4. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.





5. Remove the brake caliper mounting bracket bolts.





6. Remove the brake caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly.
7. Remove the drift from the brake rotor.





Important: When performing the following service procedure, the brake rotor does not have to be remove from the steering knuckle.

8. Remove the steering knuckle.





9. Disconnect the left side wheel drive shaft from the differential carrier assembly by placing a brass drift against the tripot housing. Firmly strike the brass drift outward from the case with a hammer. Strike hard enough to overcome the snap ring pressure holding in the shaft.





10. Disconnect the right side wheel drive shaft from the clutch fork housing assembly by placing a brass drift against the tripot housing. Firmly strike the brass drift outward from the case with a hammer. Strike hard enough to overcome the snap ring pressure holding in the shaft.
11. Pull the wheel drive shaft straight out from the differential carrier assembly or the clutch fork housing assembly.
12. Remove the wheel drive shaft.

Installation Procedure

Important: Do not lubricate or damage the differential carrier assembly seals during installation.





1. Install the left wheel drive shaft into the differential carrier assembly by doing the following:
1.1. With both hands on the tripot housing, align the splines on the shaft with the differential carrier assembly.
1.2. Center the wheel drive shaft into the differential carrier assembly seal.
1.3. Firmly push the shaft straight into the differential carrier assembly until the snap ring seats into place.

Important: Do not lubricate or damage the differential carrier assembly seals during installation.

2. Install the right wheel drive shaft into the clutch fork housing assembly by doing the following
2.1. With both hands on the tripot housing, align the splines on the shaft with the splines on the clutch fork housing assembly.
2.2. Center the wheel drive shaft into the clutch fork housing assembly seal.
2.3. Firmly push the shaft straight into the clutch fork housing assembly until the snap ring seats into place.
3. Install the steering knuckle.
4. Install the new wheel drive shaft nut.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

^ Tighten the nut to 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.).





5. Install the brake caliper and mounting bracket.





6. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket bolts.
^ Tighten the brake caliper mounting bracket bolts to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
