Service Procedure

TrailBlazer, TrailBlazer EXT, Envoy, Envoy XL, and Bravada

The following procedure provides instructions for installing a small plastic plug in the lower steering column cover and also removing the override lever from the transmission shift lever Both procedures must be performed in order to complete the recall.

INSTALLING STEERING COLUMN COVER PLUG





1. Locate the hole (1) in the lower steering column cover.

2. Using a small flat-bladed screwdriver, remove the existing plug.

3. Insert the plug from the recall kit into the hole (2) in the lower steering column cover.

Removing The Override Lever From The Transmission Shifter Assembly

1. Carefully release the shift lever boot (4) from the upper console (3) by squeezing it around the base while pulling it up.

2. Reposition the shift boot as necessary to see the right side of the shifter assembly.

Important
Some vehicles were built without the ORANGE override lever. If the vehicle you are working on does not have the ORANGE override lever, proceed to step 5 and reassemble the console.





3. Locate the ORANGE override lever (1) on the right side of the transmission shifter assembly.

4. Using a pair of long nose pliers (2), grasp the orange override lever firmly and twist it counter-clockwise while pushing it towards the right side of the vehicle. Continue twisting and pushing until the lever disconnects from the side of the shifter assembly. If you drop the override lever, it can be retrieved by carefully lifting the bottom right side of the floor console at the carpet and pulling it out.

5. Reposition the shift boot to the upper console and snap into place.

6. Place the appropriate owners manual insert in the owner's manual. If the owner's manual is the French version of the 2003 model, the owner's manual is correct and no insert is required.

7. Install the GM Recall Identification Label.

The following procedure provides instructions for installing a small plastic plug in the lower steering column cover and also removing the override lever from the transmission shift lever. Both procedures must be performed in order to complete the recall.

Installing Steering Column Cover Plug





1. Locate the hole (1) in the lower steering column cover.

2. Using a small flat~bladed screwdriver, remove the existing plug.

3. Insert the plug from the recall kit into the hole (2) in the lower steering column cover.

Removing The Override Lever From The Transmission Shifter Assembly

1. Set the parking brake.





2. Move the transmission shift lever rearward.

3. Remove the set screw from the shift lever handle and remove the handle.





4. Carefully pull the console cover (including the cupholder) upwards to release the retaining clips.

5. If any clips remained in the floor console after the console cover has been removed, remove them and reinstall them to the underside of the console cover.

Important
Some vehicles were built without the ORANGE override lever. If the vehicle you are working on does not have the ORANGE override lever, proceed to step 8 and reassemble the console.





6. Locate the ORANGE override lever (2) on the right side of the transmission shifter assembly.





7. Pull the orange lever out from the right side of the transmission shift assembly and discard it.

8. Position the console cover over the shift lever and onto the floor console. Press downwards to engage retaining clips.

9. Install the shift handle on the lever and tighten the set screw.

Tighten to 1.5 Nm (13 lb in).

10. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK.

11. Place the appropriate owner's manual insert in the owner's manual. If the owner's manual is the French version of the 2003 model, the owner's manual is correct and no insert is required.

12. Install the GM Recall Identification Label.
