Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Testing and Inspection

NOTE:
Engine must be at normal operating temperature.

Procedure

1. Loosen EGR valve inlet fitting.

2. Remove EGR valve bolts.

3. Rotate valve away from intake manifold and retighten inlet fitting.

4. Plug port in manifold.

5. Start engine and warm up.

6. Check for exhaust flow from valve. If no gas flow is detected, proceed to step 7. If exhaust gas flow is detected, disconnect vacuum line. If gas flow stops, inspect vacuum system. If gas flow does not stop, remove valve and inspect.

7. Increase engine RPM and observe valve. Proper operation is indicated when exhaust gas flows from the valve at mid- range RPM. If not, disconnect vacuum line from electro-valve vacuum tee and connect to EGR valve. If valve opens, inspect vacuum supply system. If vacuum system is properly connected, replace amplifier. If valve does not open, remove valve and inspect.

8. Connect EGR valve to manifold using new gasket.
