SUBJECT: CALIBRATING THE SEEM C.TRONIC 87 BELT TENSION GAUGE
We have received some comments from the field that the instructions for calibrating the SEEM Belt Tension Gauge are difficult to follow. Therefore, the following procedure supercedes the instructions packaged with the tool.
1. Connect the SEEM C.TRONIC to the vehicle's battery, observing polarity.
2. Select the appropriate tension screw for the belt being adjusted from the illustrations below, and install it into the gauge block. For example, use tension screw "S" when checking the XU9J4 timing belt.
3. Install the calibration strip on the gauge block with the engraved number facing up, as shown below. Tighten the tension screw all the way until it just bottoms. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Note the reading on the gauge.
4. Remove the calibration strip, flip it over, and reinstall it on the gauge block face-down. Once again, tighten the tension screw and note the reading on the gauge.
5. Add the readings obtained in steps 3 and 4 together and compare this number to the number engraved on the strip.
6. If the sum of the readings obtained in steps 3 and 4 are equal to or within one SEEM unit of the number engraved on the strip, no further calculation is necessary and the tool can be used as is.
7. If the reading obtained in steps 3 and 4 differ by two or more SEEM units from the number engraved on the strip, proceed as follows:
A. First Example
Reading from Step 3 = 30 SEEM units
Reading from Step 4 = 29 SEEM units
Add Steps 3 and 4 = 59 SEEM units
Value engraved on
calibration strip = 55
Difference = + 4 SEEM units
Correction factor = 4 divided by 2 = 2 SEEM units
Therefore, if you are adjusting a belt with a tension specification of 50 SEEM units, then it must be tightened until the SEEM C.TRONIC gauge reads 52 units.
B. Second Example
Reading from Step 3 = 25 SEEM units
Reading from Step 4 = 26 SEEM units
Add Steps 3 and 4 = 51 SEEM units
Value engraved on
calibration strip = 55
Difference = - 4 SEEM units
Correction factor = - 4 divided by 2 = -2 SEEM units
In this example, if the belt being adjusted has a specification of 50 SEEM units, then it must be tightened until the SEEM C.TRONIC gauge reads 48 units.
