FF # 85 - 4CAR: BMW & PEUGEOT, 1976 & later
COMPLAINT: Unnecessary replacement of sprag.
CAUSE:
It has come to our attention that several rebuilders have been replacing the sprag assembly in the " C" brake housing, unnecessarily.
CURE:
If you hold that sprag assembly in your hand, and try to rotate the sprag race against the sprag when the sprag is in an upright position, it will sometimes turn both ways.
THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS INDICATE THAT THE SPRAG IS DEFECTIVE!
The sprag MUST be in the same relative position that it is in when it is installed in the transmission, in order to check it properly.
The illustration shows proper installation of the sprag, with the tangs facing up. The word OBEN should be up, or toward the front of the transmission.
