Engine - Low Oil Level Indicator Description
84peugeot01 Bulletin No. 140Date: August, 1984
Subject: ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK
Starting with the 1985* Model Year, all 505 Peugeots are equipped with a low oil level indicator.
The system is made up of the following components :
- a level sensor mounted on the oil dump
- an electronic control unit (E.C.U.) mounted to the lower left dash panel (next to cruise control E.C.U.)
- an indicator light in the upper left corner of the instrument cluster
The above has necessitated the modification of the dashboard, headlight and main wiring harnesses.
A. Operating Principle
A wire with a high resistance, through which a current is passed. will not have the same thermal conductivity when exposed to the atmosphere as when it is immersed in a liquid. The variation of this resistance is calculated by an electronic control unit which will control the indicator.
B. Operation
The checking of the oil level is done with :
- the vehicle on a horizontal plane
- the engine off (without having been run for at least a half hour)
Turn key to +AC position : the indicator comes on; After two seconds :
- the indicator goes off : the oil level is correct
- the indicator blinks : the oil level is low
C. Location of the indicator light *
* On the late 1984 vehicles, equipped with this system, the amber colored lens had no graphic symbol.
