Headlights - Moisture Condensation On Inside of Glass

87peugeot01
BULLETIN NO. 238 ( 12)

DATE: May, 1987 (34)
SUBJECT: CONDENSATION IN TRIM SURROUNDING HEADLIGHTS MODEL YEAR 1984 AND LATER

COMPLAINT

The clear plastic trim which surrounds the periphery of the sealed bean for cosmetic purposes, may develop condensation on the inside of the glass for "background lighting". This condition does not impede any function, but it gives the vehicle a leas than perfect appearance.

PDI - Check for signs of condensation and perform the repair below ONLY IF CONDENSATION IS PRESENT.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Do not replace the unit, modify as shown below:

- Remove headlight assembly from vehicle

Note: Before drilling holes coat the drill bit with a "heavy" grease to avoid plastic shavings from falling inside the surrounds. Clean and re-coat the drill bit for each hole being drilled.

- Using a 3 mm diameter (1/8" diameter) bit, drill 2 breather holes, marked A and B, in the exact center of the recesses as indicated below.
IMPORTANT: MAKE THE HOLES IN THE EXACT LOCATIONS INDICATED, AS THESE ARE THE AREAS LEAST PRONE TO DRAW DUST TO THE INSIDE OF THE GLASS. TO PREVENT DUST FROM ENTERING DO NOT USE LARGER SIZE DRILL BITS THAN SPECIFIED.

Drilling 2 holes creates a ventilation effect.

The heat dissipation from the "background lighting" light bulb and the sealed beam headlamp unit will also help in the evaporation of the humidity, when driving with lights on.

NOTE: It will take some days before the effect can be noticed and the condensation has disappeared.
