Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Testing and Inspection
NO DRIVE IN ANY POSITION
1. Low fluid level.
2. Clogged suction screen.
3. Selector lever and linkage not operating correctly.
4. Main pressure regulator valve stuck in open position.
5. Defective pump.
6. Broken input or output shaft.
NO DRIVE IN 2 & 3
1. Defective sprag clutch, or installed reversed position.
EXCESSIVE RPM REQUIRED TO MOVE VEHICLE
1. Check stall speed.
NO SHIFT FROM 1-2 OR 2-3
1. Manual linkage out of adjustment.
2. 1-2 shift valve stuck in 1st gear position.
3. 2-3 shift valve stuck in 2nd gear position.
4. Governor valve stuck in open position.
ABNORMAL SHIFTING EXCEPT KICKDOWN
1. Defective or disconnected vacuum modulator.
SHIFT POINTS TOO HIGH
1. Air leak in vacuum line to modulator.
2. Leaking modulator.
SHIFT POINTS TOO LOW
1. Loss of pressure at modulator.
MANUAL SHIFT POSSIBLE ABOVE MAXIMUM SHIFT SPEED
1. Kickdown cable jammed.
2. Kickdown detent valve stuck open.
NO KICKDOWN
1. Kickdown cable stretched or broken.
2. Kickdown detent valve stuck.
NO 3-2 DOWNSHIFT EXCEPT BY KICKDOWN
1. Air leak in vacuum line to modulator.
2. 3-2 downshift control valve stuck.
ABNORMAL SHIFTS IN ALL RANGES
1. Kickdown cable out of adjustment.
2. Defective vacuum modulator.
SLIPPING IN 1ST IN 2 OR 4 POSITION
1. Defective sprag clutch.
2. Low fluid pressure.
3. Brake band out of adjustment.
SLIPPING 1-2 OR 2-3 SHIFT
1. Low fluid pressure.
2. Leaking selector detent valve.
3. Leaking 2nd clutch circuit.
4. Leaking 3rd clutch circuit.
5. Input shaft bearing worn. Loss of fluid pressure prevents engagement of 3rd gear.
6. Faulty 2nd or 3rd gear piston, seal, or ball.
7. Accumulator valve sleeve or 1-2 timing valve in valve body jammed.
SLIPPING 3-2 OR 2-1 KICKDOWN
1. Low fluid pressure.
2. Brake band control servo out of adjustment.
HARSH 1-2 OR 2-3 SHIFT
1. Fluid pressure too high, or accumulator piston jammed.
2. Accumulator detent valve stuck open.
3. Check valve ball missing or stuck open.
HARSH 2-3 DOWNSHIFT
1. Control detent valve defective.
2. High and low pressure detent valve blocked.
DRIVE IN NEUTRAL POSITION
1. Manual linkage improperly adjusted.
2. Brake band too tight.
3. Selector detent valve defective.
WILL NOT HOLD PARK
1. Manual linkage improperly adjusted.
2. Parking links defective or missing.
3. Governor pawl defective or missing.
4. Centrifugal governor hub defective.
5. Parking pawl spring defective or missing.
STEEL PARTICLES IN PAN
1. Excessive fluid pump friction.
2. Defective planetary gear.
3. Worn planetary gear spindles.
4. Governor rubbing.
5. Defective convertor stator.
FLUID LEAKAGE FROM CONVERTER HOUSING
1. Leakage from converter welds.
2. Leakage from seal between converter housing and transmission case.
3. Leakage from front transmission seal.
ALUMINUM PARTICLES IN PAN
1. Defective converter stop washer.
2. Parts rubbing inside of aluminum housings.
NON-METALLIC DEPOSIT IN PAN
1. Worn clutch linings.
2. Contaminated fluid.
LEAKAGE AT FLUID FILLER PIPE
1. Fluid level too high.
2. Blocked breather.
FLUID LEAKAGE FROM MAIN & REAR HOUSING
1. Pan gasket.
2. Gasket between main and rear housing.
3. Modulator gasket.
4. Rear transmission seal.
