PCV - Intermittent Blue Smoke and Oil Leaks
Bulletin No. 161Date: November, 1985
Subject: POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM, 1985 505 TURBO INJECTION (N9T ENGINE)
Description of Complaint:
Under combined conditions of short trip driving, high humidity and temperatures below freezing, intermittent blue smoke and engine oil leaks may occur on the vehicles listed below. This condition is due to partial ice blockage of the P.C.V. hose at the lower elbow connection to the airflow sensor to turbocharger bellows.
Vehicle Production Range:
1985 turbo injection N9T engined vehicles manufactured between V.I.N's: 0368001 and 0393000.
Service Field Fix:
On vehicles within the V.I.N range indicated above which are operated under the conditions described in paragraph one, proceed with the removal and replacement of the P.C.V bellows during P.D.I or routine maintenance service.
Parts Required:
- Bellow Part Number: 1425.F6 incorporating a relocated P.C.V fitting to eliminate condensation built-up at the hose connection.
- 1 Hose Clamp Part Number: 6982.22
Suggested Procedure:
- Remove P.C.V hose clamp at valve cover fitting.
- Remove bellows hose clamps at airflow sensor and turbocharger.
- Remove evaporative control hose and clamp from bellows.
- Remove bellows and hose as an assembly.
- Wipe clean turbocharger inlet and airflow sensor outlet.
- Install new bellows P/N 1425.F6. Carefully center bellows and hose clamps, tighten starting with the turbocharger inlet side first. The P.C.V fitting should now be facing upward.
- Reinstall evaporative control hose using a new clamp P/N 6982.22
- Remove P.C.V hose from original bellows. Cut off the elbow section of the hose 510 mm (20") from the valve cover outlet.
- Reinstall P.C.V hose and tighten hose clamps.
NOTE: Check Engine Oil Level And Top Off If Necessary.
