Engine - VE Pump Type R180 - R180/1 Procedures

Subject: R. BOSCH VE PUMP TYPE R180 - R180/1 FOR 1985 XD3T
The fitting of this pump on the XD3T Turbodiesel engine has eliminated the need for the thermostatic cold start/fast idle control on the cylinder head. The block and the cylinder head have both been provided with junction tube fittings for coolant hoses to control the thermostatic cold start advance and fast idle devices now mounted on the pump.

II - TIMING THE PUMP
This operation is carried out in accordance with the procedure described in the Diesel section, Class 1 of the 505 Workshop Manual, taking into account the following:
- The cold start device MUST BE disarmed.
- The oil cooler lines on the oil filter housing must be removed.
- Injection Timing:
Manual transmission: 10~+/-0.75 or 89 +/-0.002mm B.T.D.C. on No. 4 piston.
Automatic transmission: 8~+/-0.75 or 0.57 +/-0.002mm B.T.D.C. on No. 4 piston.
For an injection pump piston lift of 0.50 mm from B.D.C.
- Pump piston stroke is 2.5 mm.
To disarm the cold start device:
- Loosen cable clamp screw (1).
- While pushing lever (2), rotate cable clamp (1) by 900.
- Release lever (2) which will come to rest against stop (4).
IMPORTANT: - Do not alter the position of the cable stop (3).
- The cable clamp (1) must be returned to its "in use" position after each operation calling for disarming it.
III IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT
This adjustment is carried out with the engine at operating temperature and the cold start device off: (but armed - IN USE).
IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT:
- Lever (2) at rest against stop (4). There should be some play between the ball (5) and the throttle arm (6).
- The throttle arm (6) should be resting against the idle set screw (7).
The accelerator cable should either be loose or disconnected.
Turn set screw (7) to obtain:
^ 830 +/- 30 rpm
IV. COLD FAST IDLE ADJUSTMENT
This adjustment is carried out with the engine at operating temperature, and the cold start device armed.
COLD FAST IDLE ADJUSTMENT:
- Insert a 17 mm spacer between ball (5) and the throttle lever (6).
The engine speed should be:
1100 +/- 50 rpm
If necessary, adjust by sliding ball within its slot.
Once the 17 mm spacer is removed, the throttle arm (6) must not be in contact with the ball (5).
The cold start device cannot be replaced separately.
V. REMOVAL OF THE PUMP
It is not necessary to drain the cooling system for this operation.
Pump Removal:
- Release the cooling system pressure by loosening the the degassing tank cap.
- Install the special hose clamps 8.1512 onto the coolant hoses of the thermostatic element and disconnect them.
- The removal of the pump is the same as with all other VE type pumps.
