Battery - Maintenance

BULLETIN NO. 263 ( 14)

DATE: December, 1987 (10)
SUBJECT: BATTERY MAINTRNANCE

Improvements in battery design several years ago resulted in batteries being advertised by the industry as "no maintenance" or "maintenance free". Rather than requiring the addition of distilled water on a routine basis, some of these new batteries require the addition of distilled water under "severe operating conditions" only. This has caused some customer and dealer confusion.

"Severe Operating Conditions" are defined as frequent short-trip driving, operation in high ambient temperatures, and high amounts of idling.

The vehicle owner's manual states:

It is imperative to have the battery electrolyte level checked every 7,500 miles (10,000 km). Top up if necessary with distilled or demineralized water. Never add acid to a battery already in service.

Topping-Off Procedure

Add distilled water carefully until the electrolyte just contacts the bottom of the filler opening, forming a "meniscus" as shown below:
An electrolyte level "just above the plates" is not sufficient. A "full" level is 18 mm above the plates and is necessary for maximum charging efficiency.

Add only distilled water as tap water contains minerals and impurities which will reduce the battery's useful life.
