Body - Trunk Lid Will Not Open
87peugeot01BULLETIN NO. 233 ( 11)
DATE: April, 1987 (08)
SUBJECT: TRUNK LID WILL NOT OPEN - 1986 M.Y. SEDANS
This Bulletin supercedes Bulletin no. 216, class 11, dated January, 1987 and introduces a new part number to repair this condition.
FIGURE 2:
DESCRIPTION OF COMPLAINT
If the trunk lid is impossible to open with the power door lock system in unlocked mode, most likely the fork-shaped transfer bar, (b) in Fig. 3, has been dislodged:
1) Sideways in such a way that the fork just slides on the side of the lock release lever, (c) Fig. 3, instead of pushing it up.
2) So far away from the lock release lever (c) that the finger on the key lock cannot get in contact with the transfer bar (b).
FIGURE 1:
REPAIR PROCEDURE
To open the trunk lid, first try to open it with the use of the key as described in the owner's manual:
From position A (key slot toward the top) insert key and turn it to the left until the point of resistance, position B, push plunger in using key. (Approx. 11 o'clock position)
If this works, most likely the lock motor or its electrical connections are at fault.
FIGURE 2:
If the trunk lid cannot be opened, try to remove right license plate lamp by inserting a flatbladed screwdriver between the lamp rubber gasket and the spring clip (on one side of lamp only) and carefully prying the lamp out, while pushing the lamp body as hard as possible towards the spring clip side, Fig. 2.
FIGURE 3:
The lamp may have to be destroyed in order to get it out without damaging the sheetmetal and the paint of the trunk lid. If this occurs, replace the lamp.
Using an angled tool such as a drain plug wrench (a) inserted through the license plate lamp opening, push the transfer bar (b) against the lock release lever (c) to open the trunk lid.
Should this not work, push directly against the lock release lever (c), Fig. 3.
Once the trunk lid is open, remove the lock motor (two 8 mm hex head screws).
Remove the transfer bar (b) in Fig. 3 from the end of the actuator rod on the lock motor (held in place with a small circlip), and install a new improved transfer bar in its place P.N. 8642.16. Only the new improved parts are stocked.
Be sure that the spring is correctly positioned with its hook around the actuator rod and the other end in the groove in the transfer bar (b), so that the transfer bar (b) is always in contact with the lock release lever (c).
The new transfer bar has one right-angled finger which will inhibit the transfer bar becoming dislodged from the lock release lever.
When reinstalling the lock motor, first rotate the transfer bar on its axle against its return spring to make it horizontal with the motor (see Fig. 3), and slide the transfer bar (b) onto the lock relase lever (c) from its end, centered with one tooth of the fork on each side of the lock release lever.
The new style transfer bar matches the contour of the lock release lever.
The return spring should now push the transfer bar against the lock release lever until contact is made at the bottom of the fork groove.
CHECK
Ensure the free movement of all the mechanical parts involved in the operation of the trunk lid lock.
Lubricate the moving parts and their contact areas with a small amount of silicone grease.
Be sure that the transfer bar return spring is operating, keeping the transfer bar fork constantly in contact with the lock release lever.
