Exhaust - Rattling Noise on Acceleration

Bulletin No. 160

Date: November, 1985
Subject: RATTLING NOISE ON ACCELERATION - 1986 TURBO SEDANS

Description of Complaint A rattling noise may be heard on 1986 Sedans equipped with N9TE Turbo engine under light to heavy acceleration. This condition is due to insufficient clearance between the catalytic converter and the heat shield and/or the exhaust pipe (between the catalytic converter and muffler) and the torque tube.

Affected Vehicles Until further notice, all 1986 Turbo equipped Sedans should be road tested at P.D.I. for this condition and repaired as outlined below.

Parts Required: None

Repair Procedure
1. Inspect the catalytic converter heat shield to determine if it hits the catalytic converter at points "A" and "B" (Figure 1).

FIGURE 2: VIEW UNDER REAR AXLELOOKINGTOWARD FRONT OF VEHICLE:

2. Check the clearance between the exhaust and the torque tube (Figure 2) at C and D.
3. Loosen the exhaust center pipe clamps at the catalytic converter and the rear muffler.

4. Loosen the exhaust center pipe bracket at E.

5. Align the exhaust center pipe so that the clearance is split 1/3 at C, 2/3 at D. This will allow for the difference in engine torque under acceleration versus engine "braking".
6. Bend and align the heat shield as necessary to obtain sufficient clearance.

7. Retighten all clamps and ROAD TEST TO VERIFY THE CORRECTNESS OF THIS REPAIR.
