Turbocharger - N9TE Possible Coolant Loss
Bulletin No. 165Date: December, 1985
Subject: POSSIBLE LOSS OF COOLANT - DANGER OF TURBOCHARGER COOLANT HOSE RUBBING AGAINST A/C COMPRESSOR, N9TE VEHICLES
IMPORTANT!
Description Of Problem On 1986 N9TE Turbo Gas Sedans and Station Wagons, there is a possibility of the turbocharger coolant inlet hose coming in contact with the edge of one of the mounting lugs on the air conditioner compressor. If the hose becomes cut, coolant will be lost resulting in progressively:
a. "Steam" from the engine
b. Hissing noise from the engine compartment
c. Coolant temperature gauge goes to hot
d. Coolant system level warning light goes on
e. Coolant system overheat warning light goes on
f. Engine exhibits ping
g. Engine damage results from oil film breakdown, e.g. rod knocks
h. If all of these warnings are ignored, the engine may fail completely
Plastic Hose Clamp & Metallic Clip:
Repair Procedure
1) Disconnect the plastic hose clamp on the turbocharger coolant hose from the metallic clip on the sidemember. Remove the metallic clip from the sidemember by prying it loose. Discard both plastic hose clamp and metallic clip.
2) In order to straighten and stiffen the turbocharger coolant hose which will have the effect of moving it away from the A/C compressor, and also to protect the hose against deterioration from rubbing against the A/C compressor in extreme cases, wrap a 20 inch long (50 cm) plastic spiral, P.N. 0013.75 around the length of the hose.
