Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Removal

Cylinder head must be removed only when engine is cold to avoid risk of distortion.

1. Drain coolant from block and remove air filter, intake manifold, PCV pipe, upper radiator hose, water pump drive belt, distributor cap, spark plugs and valve cover.
2. Disconnect leads and hoses as necessary. Remove spark plug tube seals and cups.
3. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove outermost cylinder head bolts on exhaust side and fit suitable cylinder head guides.
4. Remove rocker shaft assembly and pushrods.
5. Remove head guide from front bolt hole and pivot head to separate from the block and cylinder liners.
6. Remove cylinder head and gasket and cylinder head guide. Lock liners with two retaining screws.

Installation

1. Clean face of block including threaded holes in block. Do not scrape carbon off pistons as damage to liners may result.
2. Clean face of cylinder head, head bolts and pushrods.
3. Check surface of cylinder head. Distortion must not exceed 0.002 inch (0.05 mm). Cylinder head may be milled 0.020 (0.5 mm).
4. Install gasket with word ``DESSUS'' facing up.
5. Install pushrods and rocker shaft assembly. Smear bolt threads with tallow, fit flat washers, and screw bolts down lightly. Bolts should turn freely.

Fig. 1 Cylinder head torque sequence:

6. Pretorque head in sequence shown in Fig. 1, to 36 ft. lbs. (5 m-kg).
7. Torque rocker shaft support nuts to 11 ft. lbs. (1.5 m-kg).
8. Loosen No. 1 bolt completely and torque to 14.47 ft. lbs. (2 m-kg). Then tighten additional 1/4 turn. Follow this procedure for remaining head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 1.
