Timing Chain Replace
Fig. 3 Releasing chain tension:
1. Refer to ``Timing Cover, Replace'' procedure to remove timing cover.
2. Release chain tensioner. Two types are used, Renold and Sedis. On XM, XM7 and XN1 engines with Renold tensioner (1), Fig. 3 top left view, remove plug (2), insert a 3 mm Allen wrench and turn clockwise to release. On KF6, KF5 and XN2 engines use pad retaining tool 0.0137, Fig. 3 lower left view. On engines with Sedis tensioner (3), Fig. 3 top right view, place ratchet (a) in position shown.
3. Remove tensioner, plate, and filter, Fig. 3, lower right view.
4. Remove in following order: camshaft sprocket, timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, Woodruff key.
5. Without altering position of crankshaft, install Woodruff key and crankshaft sprocket.
Fig. 4 Positioning camshaft:
6. Position camshaft, then crankshaft as shown in Fig. 4.
7. Install chain on camshaft sprocket, then assembly on crankshaft sprocket as shown in Fig. 4. Reference marks on sprockets must be in line with axes of crankshaft and camshaft. Camshaft sprocket mark up and crankshaft sprocket mark down.
8. Place new tab washer on camshaft sprocket and torque bolts to 16.3 ft. lbs. (2.25 m-kg). Bend tab washer up around bolt heads.
9. Insert filter and install tensioner. On Renold tensioners, load tensioner by turning Allen key clockwise. Fit new tab washer on plug and install plug. Bend tab up around plug head. On KF6, KF5 and XN2 engines with Renold tensioner, install retaining tool, load tensioner and fit plug and tab washer before installing tensioner on block. Remove tool when tensioner is installed. On Sedis tensioner, load tensioner by turning screw clockwise. Do not assist tensioner action.
